In a letter to his mother the Monroe sergeant details preparations for the Saipan and Tinian landings. He describes ships bombarding the coast, dawn sighting of the island, and soldiers boarding amphibious tractors for the assault.

Washington reports on Bureau of Internal Revenue rulings from Missouri clarifying exemptions for 1944 taxes. Cases include one wife per year, one $500 exemption. mother in law remains a dependent. fathers may claim dependents like a son-in-service only under specific conditions. a nephew of a deceased wife is not a joint nephew. adopted children only for dependents. a youth earning $430 can have full $500 exemption if funds are war bonds. no exemption for stillborns.
Northeast Louisiana civic leaders press for amendments to the McCarran and Sea bills to channel all federal airport funding through states and base grants on highway allocations since 1922. They warn towns like Bastrop Ruston Winnsboro and Monroe risk losing air access without equitable state distribution postwar.
In New Orleans two drowning deaths were reported. Navy enlisted Seaman 2c John B Wells III, of New Orleans, drowned after diving from a cliff near the sea wall. About an hour later three year old Charles P. Saltzman of East End died while playing with other children in two feet of water near his home. Both incidents ruled accidental drownings.
Cpl. Walter L. Lacey of 207 Stella Street West Monroe after 28 months in the south Pacific is home on a 60 day furlough. He served with the marines during the war and is now back with his family briefly before duty calls again.
E F Jones commander of L B Faulk Post No 13 announces the annual election of officers for 1915 1946 will be held at Monday night meeting at 8 00 pm Delegates and alternates to the department convention will also be chosen A number of new members will be initiated and full attendance is requested by the commander
Capt Estus A Autrey a army chaplain and West Monroe resident has just returned from overseas service with the 78th fighter group after three years in the armed forces. He will preach at Ridge Avenue Baptist Church West Monroe at 11 am and at the First Baptist Church West Monroe in the evening.
Eugene F Holdsworth of Monroe New York is cited for bravery near Gennano Italy in June 1944. He led a mine clearing squad under fire to open supply routes for his battalion, enabling vital deliveries. He has served since March 1943 and is with anti tank company 179th infantry regiment.
