Also at the border a Russian-born wife of Oklahoma City soldier Samuel Hawkins crossed into Hong Kong, while Hawkins himself may choose to go to Communist China.

Coci Says Five Machines Seized By State Police
Sheriff William Coci reported five illegal gambling machines seized by state police in Jefferson Parish and two men arrested on racehorse handbook charges. Machines were smashed at East Bank jail after a two day search. Seizures included Moulin Rouge Marrero two horseracing machines, Moonlight Inn Gretna slot machine, and Baker's Market Harvey slot machine.

State College Heads Told To Trim Budgets
Baton Rouge June 14 The Board of Education directed state college presidents to trim budgets for the next school year to fit legislative appropriations. Budgets due July 3 for board review before July 18 meetings. Nine state colleges sought a total rise of 5 625 884 for 1957 58. Governor Long’s budget committee cut the total to 22 481 067 an increase of 1 438 409. President Charles C Elkins of Nicholls State College Thibodaux protested that the budget committee did not consider Nicholls expansion into the third and fourth year. Elkins obtained board approval to petition the Board of Liquidation of State Debt.

Final Civil Rights Vote Set Monday
The House defeated a Southern bid to attach a jury trial amendment to Eisenhower’s civil rights bill by 199 to 167, clearing the way for final passage next Monday. The bill then moves to the Senate where opponents hope to stall it. The administration argued the amendment would wreck the bill while supporters said it protected Americans’ rights.

Former Mail Clerk Fined For Football Fraud
Marshall T. Gregory a suburban Tucker railway mail clerk was fined 1000 dollars in U S District Court for mail fraud after being accused of winning a national football guessing contest without truly guessing. Prosecutors said he used his wife’s name for 19 of 20 winners and altered postmarks to claim prizes including a 5000 dollar auto. He worked on an Atlanta to Nashville route and plans to appeal claiming a self devised system justified his winnings.
