Hollywood dispatch reports famed Shakespearean actor Walter Hampden died at Cedars of Lebanon hospital following a stroke. He was stricken while en route to a Metro-Goldwyn-Mary film assign ment after showing signs of recovery the day before. Hampden, 75, retired from stage and screen in 1947 after a long career beginning in 1901 in Brighton England and rising to prominence in New York theater.
