Officer Rescues Man From Smoke Filled Apartment
Monroe Police Capt J K Mc Mullen dragged Cecil Eugene Cullipher 25 from a smoking back bedroom to safety after he was overcome by smoke. Firemen treated him and the mattress blaze was confined to one room with little building damage. Cullipher is hospitalized with superficial burns. Cause of fire undetermined.

WEST POINT Ga A teen- aged boy was swept to his death in the Chattahoochee River when he tried to wade 30 yards to a sandbar on a bet. Thomas Sanders 18 moved from Columbus to Langdale Ala with his mother. His companion Billy Richardson also from Langdale said Sanders could not swim.

Runaway Flatcar Kills Two in Los Angeles
Two trainmen, Frank Teed and Carl Olsen, died when a runaway 35 ton flatcar at Sun Valley rolled onto the Southern Pacific right of way and struck their diesel engine at about 60 mph. Lumber from the load caused the fatal crash and the cab caught fire before rescuers could reach the men. Teed would have retired on June 28.
