Voters across 14 parishes go to the polls from 6 a m to 8 p m to decide a one cent sales tax increase in the Fifth District. About 100 000 eligible voters are urged to vote early amid expected high turnout. If approved, most revenue funds would raise salaries for school and municipal workers, with remaining funds aiding education and local governments.
Police and soldiers fired grenades into the air to scatter mobs in downtown Cairo as a fierce antiaircraft barrage lit the sky. The Ministry reported an air raid in progress with no planes seen by 11 30 pm, while Cairo reportedly faced Israeli bombing claims denied by Israel.
The Pentagon reports Army Spec. 4 C Davis Harris V Davis of near Monroe Louisiana was killed in action in Vietnam. He is survived by his parents Mr and Mrs Fred Davis. The announcement confirms his death and housing his family in Monroe area.
In Shreveport Louisiana a 40 year old man George Montgomery was killed during a gun battle with police after they found him beside a dead woman at a residence. Maggie Montgomery aged 70 also died from gunshot wounds in the same incident. Police cornered the suspect with tear gas and returned fire when he exited the home. Officials said two bullets were found in his weapon and the exact sequence of the woman's death remains undetermined.
Communist forces launched a heavy mortar strike on Pleiku and its U.S. Vietnamese base at 1:30 a.m., killing at least two U.S. soldiers and wounding 35. The assault followed a similar attack on Hue a day earlier with one American wounded.
Petty Officer Virgil Brownfield recalls the 15 minute assault on the USS Liberty by Israeli planes and torpedo boats off the Sinai Peninsula. Thirty three Americans died and 75 were wounded as helicopters evacuated casualties to the USS America carrier.

United Nations Security Council adjourned without word of Israel Syria cease fire. The United States urged effective U N machinery to enforce cease fire demands. The Soviet Union pressed Thant to contact U N observers and report back within a half hour. Thant warned communications were difficult and urged Israel to restore UN access to Government House in Jerusalem.
