Voters across 14 parishes go to the polls from 6 a m to 8 p m to decide a one cent sales tax increase in the Fifth District. Shreveport Man Killed In Shootout With Police

In Shreveport Louisiana a 40 year old man George Montgomery was killed during a gun battle with police after they found him beside a dead woman at a residence. Maggie Montgomery aged 70 also died from gunshot wounds in the same incident. Police cornered the suspect with tear gas and returned fire when he exited the home. Officials said two bullets were found in his weapon and the exact sequence of the woman's death remains undetermined.

Communists Hit Pleiku in Second South Vietnam City Attack

Communist forces launched a heavy mortar strike on Pleiku and its U.S. Vietnamese base at 1:30 a.m., killing at least two U.S. soldiers and wounding 35. The assault followed a similar attack on Hue a day earlier with one American wounded.
