The Defense Department aims to move a full Army division of about 15,000 soldiers to Europe this year in a large scale, realistic test of the combined Army Air Force Strike Command, a costly but strategic exercise requiring rapid jet transport reliance and timing with budget debates in Congress.
MONTEREY La AP Shel by N Jackson state superintendent of education announced his candidacy for governor Saturday. Jackson who has been superintendent for 15 years told an estimated 5 000 backers he would represent good government growth and prosperity. He made the formal pitch for the Dec 7 Democratic primary at his former high school here as his supporters enjoyed the picnic atmosphere and 3 000 pounds of barbecued beef brought out for the occasion. Jackson said he could offer the ability leadership qualities years of successful experience and the maturity to make a good governor. The 59 year old native of Eva in Concordia Parish said we must have strong outstanding capable leadership in government willing to put forth best efforts for the good of all facing the problems of this age unafraid in taking a stand for that which is good and fighting that which is wrong. Sound fiscal policy backed up with the practices of honesty integrity fairness and economy at all levels of public administration was promised by Jackson. He said he would administer in such a way that we will deserve good government and promised an aggressive fight against what he called federal encroachment upon the rights of the states. Jackson said he would solicit the support of other governors in our fight to restore constitutional government in this country. Maj. Gen. Amin Hafez emerged as Syria's undisputed strongman after being named army commander in chief and chairman of the National Revolutionary Council. He replaces Louai Attassi who resigned from both posts amid a power struggle following a March coup. Hafez, 52, already held deputy premier and defense interior posts and will retain them.
A large metal building at a suburban Neville Island chemical firm was destroyed by a fire fed by chemicals and minor explosions. About 150 firefighters fought for seven hours to control the blaze, with total damage estimated at around 500000 by plant manager H. J. Shearer. Deputy Fire Marshall David Alsley said the blaze started from an overheated resin tank used in making floor tile paint and varnish.
The Senate Commerce Committee halted a hearing on Kennedy rail labor legislation to push serious collective bargaining. Acting Chairman Pastore asked for more time for negotiations between carriers and unions as Labor Secretary Wirtz and others held talks. A 26 year old South American driver in a low slung sports car freed his East Berlin girlfriend in a drenching rain at 3 am Friday. The 22 year old hid in the car trunk as he zigzagged past 38 inch barrier poles at Friedrichstrasse crossing. The man’s name was not disclosed. sources vary claim Argentinian or Brazilian.
HYANNIS PORT Mass AP W Averell Harriman said the Moscow test ban treaty is a very important first step toward better East West relations and does not inhibit use of nuclear weapons in war. He spoke after briefing Kennedy on Khrushchev talks and delivered a personal Khrushchev message. A 90 minute White House meeting led to plans for a formal Moscow signing with Rusk Foster and Fisher present. The conference stressed that questions about war use were discussed, but treaty language clarifies no inhibition.
