William O Causey a 27 year old Monroe native and 18 month police veteran resigned yesterday to run for city marshal. He vows full cooperation with law enforcement, fair impartial office conduct, and plans to contact every Monroe voter during the campaign.
Dr W W Parker president of Southeast Missouri State Teachers College will deliver the summer term commencement address at Louisiana State Normal College on August 5. President Joe Farrar will award certificates to 81 seniors while Dr Marvin Pittman reads the honor roll. Final exams for summer candidates are set for July 31 and August 3 with undergraduates taking exams August 5 and 7.
Up to Saturday noon the field for district judges and district attorney was mostly unopposed with David J. Garrett seeking re election and Frank W Hawthorne for the vacated seat. George Lester has qualified for district attorney with John F McCormick as a possible opponent. City marshal candidates number five Basil Risher incumbent Marcus Kahn Percy Walker Floyd Ferrington and William Causey. City judge W M Harper is qualified. West Monroe candidates include Jesse S Heard for city judge and T J Tom Brown with R L Kilgore for city marshal. Ouachita parish school board race lists nine candidates. Congressional contenders Newt W Mills and Charles E McKenzie have qualified with more expected soon.

Lake Providence La July 25 Special Ollie Frits exhibits his first cotton boll from a four acre plot. He and his wife with one child have farmed behind the levee with care and plan to begin picking. They also raised a victory garden and sold vegetables from the same strip.

Monroe firemen extinguised a blaze at the Frizzell Brick Company near Swartz on Friday afternoon. Water was pumped through 900 feet of hose from a nearby bayou, roof sections of two kilns burned away, caused by intense heat. The plant is owned by B. T. Crawford and Bruce Frizzell. Firemen from Truck No. 5 answered at 4 20 pm and returned to Monroe by 7 40 pm.
Lucian Austin Sawyer 19 of Pollock is named by Rep Newt Mills to the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis. He will depart tonight via Baltimore and Washington before reporting for active duty. Sawyer, son of Mrs Julius Guinn and L E Sawyer, graduated Ouachita Parish High and attended Tech, worked for Ford Bacon and Davis in Marshall, Tex. He was admitted without exam and is Irene Reid’s first cousin. Germany permits private use of cars only if needed for war effort.
