The Federal Reserve Board reports June industrial production fell to 109, near March April levels, with steel, furniture, air conditioners and TVs down. Output in aircraft constrained by strikes and iron steel at 61 percent capacity. Unemployment climbs to 4.4 million as teens enter labor market.
Fire heavily damaged the Sherrouse School auditorium and stage with smoke and water likely causing most harm. Engines 3 5 responded quickly followed by engine 6 and ladder 2, halting the blaze amid adjacent frame buildings. Spectators noted large smoke plumes while a softball game nearby paused then resumed once under control.
A string of crashes in West Monroe and nearby areas left seven people injured. Christy’s southbound car collided with a northbound vehicle turning left on Mount Vernon Road, while a Dickson child was struck on North 18th Street by Daniel W. Harper. Franks 21 of Fern Street West Monroe held on $350 bond for reckless driving. Reginald Colvin 21 of Sterlington held on $30 bond for minor traffic violations. Sam Smith 47 and Henry Jackson held on $28 bonds each for disturbing the peace.
