Japanese ensemble Hiraoka Chamber Ensemble to perform in Ruston

The Hiraoka Chamber Ensemble from Hyogo Prefecture Japan, led by xylophone virtuoso Yoichi Hiraoka, arrives for its first U S tour and will perform at 8 p m Tuesday in Howard Auditorium on Louisiana Tech campus Ruston. The program features Bach Haydn Brahms Enesco Mozart and other composers.

Hall Street Exit Remains Closed Until Project Ends

The Hall Street exit from Interstate 20 in Monroe will stay closed to traffic until work on U S Highway 165 and I 20 to Nutland Road is finished. Jimmy Moore, vice chairman of the State Highway Board, said opening the exit would confuse motorists. Work on the remaining stretch should be completed by Oct 1, after which the exit will allow local traffic while through traffic remains redirected.

Tentative Allotments of Tax Set

Government officials in Ouachita Parish began tentative allotments of Fifth District sales tax revenue if approved by voters. Key sums include West Monroe 246000 for salaries. parish fire department needs 129000 for pay and gear. Sterlington 13000 for streets and drainage plus town hall and fire station work. Monroe 906000 for city employee raises though the final may be lower.

Man Booked For Theft By Check

Monroe police booked Earnest Compton 24 of 811 S 1st St for theft by check. A J Franklin 40 of 117 Breard's Alley was charged with aggravated battery after stabbing incident on N 14th St. Hugh Whitfield 43 reported the assault. he was treated and released. West Monroe officers booked two DUI cases Pamela Rose 22 and Edgar Greer 57. Lizzie Roberts 73 injured in car crash with Fred Roberts 71 on N Tih and Stella Streets. Tire rim theft reported in Fastgate Parking Lot. Hosa VeGee 23 and Ned Milton Ross 31 charged with simple battery. Loch Ness sighting reported in Glasgow.

Librarians Attend 85th American Library Association Conference in New York

More than 7 000 attendees expected at the 85th annual ALA conference in New York from July 10 to 16. Theme Libraries and the Inquiring Mind. Sessions include 625 meetings with speakers from education technology science industry and communication. Frances Flanders head librarian Ouachita Parish and Mrs Hoffman Jones librarian Morehouse Parish Bastrop among participants. In New Delhi a tripoint summit of Egyptian Yugoslav and Indian leaders is planned for October 21 to 25.

Specialist Willis B. Fyvans of Monroe completed instructional primary training at Fort Walter and will attend an aerial formation school. The Monroe American Legion branch cancels tonight's social to allow attendance at the state convention where new officers will be elected. The fourth Barn burg Mathis family reunion will be held Sunday at Cheney Lake, West Monroe, hosted by O. F. Bamburg with descendants attending.

Art Majors Exhibit to Show Works at Bry Hall Gallery

North east Louisiana State College presents a two week exhibit in Bry Hall Art Gallery featuring Bonnie Bayles Joseph of Downsville and Harriet Murray of Monroe. The display includes oil paintings silk screens etchings ceramics lithographs and woodcuts with three prize winning works. Murray's Oriental Typhoon silk screen and Lost Image etchings earned second in spring Port Arthur shows while Joseph's The Sister etching placed second in Port Arthur. Many works will be for sale.

Century Seeks Civil Rights Gap Narrowing in U S

Labor Secretary W. Willard Wirtz told the Foreign Correspondents Club of Japan that the United States must close the century old social gap between races caused by discrimination. He noted progress in two years and said much work remains in education and other fields.
