The Purple Heart award was enclosed with the bullet, attributed to restrictive wartime policies and limited discretion of the War Labor Board. Bronze Star Medal for Capt Goodwin at Leyte Island

Capt Hugh Hilton Goodwin U S N son of Mr and Mrs H T Goodwin of Monroe received the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious achievement as commanding officer of a U S ship from June 14 to August 4 1944 during the Leyte assault and island capture under enemy air attacks. The photo was taken on Leyte Island last Christmas Day.

Grant Cole Downs Japanese Aircraft

Lt. (jg) Grant H. Cole, son of Mr and Mrs Ben Cole of 2900 South Grand, a Navy fighter pilot, helped defeat Japanese planes in a Philippine area air battle. He and crew sighted over 32 Jap aircraft and dove in a 12 plane formation, firing on targets. The 22 year old, commissioned 1943, is married. his wife stays with her parents in Arkansas City.

Arrest Made On Hog Theft Charge In Brownville

Sheriff Milton Coverdale announced the arrest of J. T. Tisdale Brownville on hog theft after farmers complaints from wards 7 8 and 9. Tisdale held twelve live hogs with one identified as the property of Phelam Warren's son. Bond set at 750, he remains jailed in Quahehi Parish.

Traffic lights to be installed at highway 80 intersection

Major Baker announced two traffic caution blink lights will be installed at the intersection of highway 80 and Kansas Lane and near the N C O club to reduce hazards. GE Company has the order and Monroe police jury negotiates terms. The road to Selman Field, repaved by the state highway commission, should be ready for full use this week.
