Colonel Earl L. Naiden arrived by air as the new commanding officer of Selman Field succeeding Colonel Norris B. Harbeld. Naiden, veteran of the southwest Pacific and Asiatic theaters, led Craig Field prior to his Selman posting and helped found and expand the air navigation training program. He also organized the India China Ferry Command in India during wartime.

Louisiana planters including Angola penitentiary sold under the highest price for 1942 season. later prices changed to the season average, cutting returns by about 150 000 dollars. Smith notes hearing in Washington was agreed after Jones telephoned Price Administrator Henderson.
In reports from London dated Sunday January 3 the Red Army pushed into the north Caucasian rail line capturing Remontnaya 117 miles southwest of Stalingrad and retaking Elkhotevo near Nalchik with heavy booty. Russian communiques claim major German losses from Velikie Luki to the mid Caucasus including tanks guns and troops, while Berlin radio asserts Velikie Luki remains in German hands.
Allied ground troops in New Guinea broke the back of Japanese resistance at Buna without a general assault. Australians attacked from the right, supported by tanks and artillery, taking Gipora point. Americans widened a wedge toward Buna government station and strengthened a beachhead left from earlier gains. Evidence suggested Japanese abandoned defense around Papopoint.
A blaze at Cedar Rapids airport gutted the hangar and machine shop injuring 29 planes. Business Manager Leo Damge pegged damages at 180600 dollars, with only four stored aircraft saved. A spark from a welder’s torch started the fire near the hangar.
