In Tacoma detectives pursue a mysterious bearded man who sought the abandoned turkey ranch mentioned in the Charles Mattson kidnapping probe. Investigators question a former convict while ink analysis and camp-site clues receive attention as the stricken family shows little outward distress.
An Navajo reservation superintendent and pilot Bill Cutter reported food drops to about 20 snowbound Indians in rugged country south of Gallup New Mexico. They said many more were holed up awaiting rescue and another truck was seen on a trail. Over 300 Indians were stranded within 30 to 100 miles south and southwest. Arthur Hubbard and a sick child reached Ganado Arizona hospital safely.
The New Year period brought at least 968 deaths nationwide from Christmas to New Year, with 555 traffic fatalities and 176 fire related or other violent deaths. Pennsylvania led states with 29 fatalities, 19 of them traffic related, and California reported 22. A collision in Bloomer Wisconsin killed five occupants when a train struck their auto.
In Charlevoix Michigan two bodies were recovered from the burned hulk of the oil tanker Marold II after an explosion during salvage operations for its gasoline cargo. Victims include Captain L L Hill Beaver Island residents Leon Hill Everett Cole Raymond Cole and Bruce McDonough. Coast guardsmen retrieved the bodies from the J Oswald Boyd after the fire subsided.
In Daytona Beach Florida Mrs Irene Armstrong refuses to relinquish the mayoral seat as a court blocks Governor Sholtz removal order. Adj Gen Vivien Collins had 200 guardsmen ready to enforce the order but soldiers were sent home after Judge Herbert Frederick enjoined the appointees. City hall remains guarded with police on duty as the writ awaits Monday court arguments.
Representative John Rankin of Mississippi exits the race for the house Democratic leadership. With Rankin out, John O'Connor of New York and Sam Rayburn of Texas face off as Democratic members prepare to pick their leader in a caucus Monday afternoon.
Charred wreckage of an Army plane carrying Colonel F I Eglin and Lieutenant Howard Shelton Jr was found on Cheaha mountain in heavy rain and fog. The two were identified by markings and a naval academy ring.
John C. Bass longtime East Carroll Parish sheriff died at 54 in a Vicksburg hospital after serving as clerk of court and sheriff for 16 years. Survived by widow Marguerite Bass two daughters Marguerite and Mrs L L Kirkpatrick and brother Baker Bass. Funeral Sunday 2 30 p m from his Lake Providence residence burial in Lake Providence cemetery. Dr W H Hamley coroner becomes sheriff until governor appoints successor.
Baton Rouge January 2. Sheriff N H de Bretton reports a man held in Cleveland Ohio as James Alton Jordan has been identified as a fugitive charged with stealing a car from Albany Louisiana owner G H A Thomas. Fingerprints matched by the FBI and extradition considered if not convicted in Cleveland. The wrecked vehicle was found in a Waterproof Louisiana garage with a $30 towing bill.
Juliana and Bernhard prepare for marriage in The Hague. The couple will live at Soestdijk Palace after a people funded modernization. The union makes Juliana the House of Orange’s future consort in a ceremony noted across Holland.
Berlin reports the German government will persist in action against Spanish vessels after the Palos seizure. Graf Spee seized Aragon, Koenigsburg drove Soton aground, and Bilbao warned it would fire on attacked ships, a Basque port conflict labeled an act of war.
Senator Pat Harrison recommended Sid ney C. Mize of Gulfport Miss for the federal judgeship in the southern district of Mississippi. Senator Bilbo backed the move, submitting Mize among 20 candidates. If confirmed, Mize would replace Judge Edwin R. Holmes whose circuit court bid faced Bilbo’s opposition.

Jan 2 4 Strikers at two Fisher Body plants in Flint were ordered to vacate by Circuit Judge Edward D Black in a temporary injunction. About 7500 workers were affected by a work suspension while 200 stay in strikers remained in each building as UAW CIO affiliates push for a collective bargaining agreement with General Motors. The order against the United Automobile Workers and union leaders restrains interference with entry exit and merchandise delivery.
Pope Pius XI, weakened by circulatory issues and a burst varicose vein, received messages of sympathy from rulers worldwide. Diplomats presented condolences as doctors reported no material change in his condition, though he spoke briefly with Archbishop Jean Chollet of Cambrai.
Gardner Nagle of Shreveport Louisiana piloting an open bi plane was forced down on a road outside Spartanburg South Carolina during a heavy rain. Miss Jaypee Keasley, 28, died after a seven month fight with a rare streptococcus viridans blood infection treated by a new French serum. She had recently left Baptist State hospital for home care, with serum shipments arriving from Montreal and New York via boat from France. Physicians said the serum may be used in the United States for the first time.
The debutante Priscilla St George, daughter of Mr and Mrs George B St George of Tuxedo Park, married Angier Riddle Duke in a lavish ceremony at noon with a reception that rivaled earlier grand weddings of the holiday season.
United States conference of mayors urged the federal government provide 877.5 million dollars to fund work relief from February 1 to June 30, to aid about 2.7 million people. The plan exceeds Hopkins proposed 750 million and anticipates continued action to supplement funds.
The condition of Earl Vose of 303 Texas Avenue remained serious but hopeful at Riverside sanitarium after being stabbed in the chest by his brother in law R M Carr Monroen surance man. The blade pierced the pleural cavity and slightly punctured a lung though the heart was missed by about an inch. Carr was arrested and later moved to parish jail awaiting possible charges of stabbing with intent to kill as Voss shows no major deterioration beyond infection or pneumonia risk. The stabbing occurred at Voss's home after an argument during a drinking incident.
Senator Robinson urged constitutional amendment as the best way to handle wage and hour issues, saying Supreme Court rulings limit federal and state power. He also indicated a possible early reduction in federal staff, especially relief workers, and noted pending nonamendment proposals worth study. A coroner's jury in Mansfield Louisiana found that town marshal John Frazier 45 killed himself after a crash that also killed waitress Wernie Dillard 24. Grace Cox 24 survived with minor injuries as Sidney Magness 55 endured multiple fractures. Funeral services for Frazier were held in Mansfield.
In Wack Texas on January 2 a verdict found Charles Gordon Hill died by self inflicted gunshot after shooting his mother Elizabeth Hill 72 who was wounded in the abdomen. Hill died from two head wounds and police report the son lived with his mother.
