UPI reports a U. S. security official says a Viet Cong member has been arrested for the bombing of the American community theater in Saigon. Despite this, Communist attacks continue and guerrillas escalated military operations.
Following a February 16 theater bombing that killed three Americans and wounded twelve, Viet Cong actions spread to Long Xuyen where a U.S. adviser’s house was damaged but with no casualties. A grenade strike on a Saigon police station wounded six. Flyers in Saigon accused Americans as intelligence notes cite Viet Cong action cells delaying demoralization of U.S. personnel. Despite the Communist holiday, officials say no extra precautions are planned though Americans have been advised previously.
In Chattanooga and during a lengthy hearing, a cryptic assassination plot reference surfaced in the Hoffa trial as defense seeks to suppress wiretap evidence. Judge Wilson denied excluding Edward Partin testimony. Trial resumes with final arguments looming, jurors expected Tuesday.
Washington AP The Commerce Department blocked a $2 million sale of American lard to Cuba, placing lard on the list of commodities requiring a government export license. The move followed a demand by Senator Kenneth Keating for action after the proposed deal became public.
Rep. Otto Passman announces federal officials reached an agreement allowing wildlife authorities to control water levels at Catahoula Lake near Jonesville.
