Snow and sleet hinder a large search as seven men and a woman aboard a United Airliner vanish after a Friday flight from Salt Lake City to Cheyenne. Ground and air teams face 100 foot ceilings and deep snow while hope fades for the eight passengers and crew.
A rain extinguished warning lights at a detour caused a bus of 35 Mormon church workers to skid and overturn 35 miles from Wickenburg. Six people, five women and a baby, died and 27 were injured as victims trapped in the rear compartment. A boy ran a mile to alert officials and relief parties were dispatched.

Dr. Thomas L. Mills and his wife were severely injured when their car collided with a Yazoo and Mississippi Valley train at Lindsay, 15 miles north of Baton Rouge. They were taken to a Baton Rouge hospital with head cuts and other injuries. The train, a local mixed freight and passenger, was moving between Slaughter and Woodville.
Three young women in New Orleans were hospitalized after unrelated suicide attempts. Elaine Garethera, 18, allegedly swallowed poison from a hot drink stand. Byrdie D Burgamy, 32, shot herself in the face, with a note citing tensions. Vandiver, 22, reportedly swallowed poison at home.
In Greenwood Mississippi Dr Sarah Ruth Dean a 33 year old physician shows visible breakdown and weeps in court while on trial for murder by mercury poisoned whisky highball. Attorneys say she is ill and verging on collapse as the fourth week of testimony ends and the judge denies a weekend adjournment.
A bulletin from H. J. Early's office reports wage reductions for CWA laborers in eight Louisiana parishes from 40 to 30 cents an hour, retroactive for the current week. Foremen and timekeepers may escape the cut for now, while the demobilization plan is not disrupted.
Judge W W Callahan sustains two state motions to strike motions for new trials for two of nine negroes in Scottsboro case due to expired time before bill of exceptions. Attorneys Fraenkel and Chamblee say they will appeal to the Alabama Supreme Court and file the bill of exceptions within ten days.
Leopold II and Queen Astrid begin their joint rule touring Belgium to unite Flemings and Walloons under one flag. The pair will move from their private life to royal duties, visiting towns nationwide as their first major task. They will reside at the royal castle in Laeken after the enthronement.
SEMINOLE Okla Feb 24 Mrs Bob Hill wife of an oil employee was fatally burned and two other family members injured when a series of explosions destroyed the Grisso gasoline plant of the Carter Oil company. The plant contained 14 tanks with 280 000 gallons of fuel and officials estimated losses at about 2 000 000. Mrs Hill was burned in her home east of the refinery when an exploding tank sprayed flaming gasoline into the house which burned down. Her husband was seriously burned and their 13 year old daughter sustained minor burns.
Jefferson Caffery of Louisiana took the oath as ambassador to Cuba at the American embassy in Havana in the presence of American newspapermen. He plans to present credentials to President Mendieta on February 28 and succeeds Sumner Wells who resigned to join the State Department.
Former Mississippi governor Theo G. Bilbo quits his post at the Agriculture Adjustment Administration effective March 1. He avoids confirming any Senate run, saying no future plans will be stated until after his resignation.
American Legion posts across Mississippi were urged to attend a mass meeting in Jackson on March 1 to demand immediate cash payment of the bonus. Adjutant General Thomas Grayson organized committees after the Jackson post approved the plan, with an estimate of 10,000 state members expected to attend and congressional speakers invited.
Reports said a pro government Heimwehr march on Vienna was imminent as trucks rolled from towns toward the capital. Leaders planned to concentrate forces to seize government control with Dollfuss accepting, posters appeared, and frontier checks found no Nazi buildup.
Brooklyn reports two Army lieutenants recount the crash at sea near Coney Island. They clung for five hours to the wings of a crippled plane as their friend Lieut George F McDermott drowned. The Bernadou rescued them fifteen minutes later after a police plane departed.
Berlin reports that Adolf Hitler can proclaim himself emperor any time after 10:30 a.m. Sunday. About 1,017,000 Nazi officials will swear loyalty in unison, with 375,000 party bosses and 205,000 Hitler youth leaders among those taking the oath, connected by radio to Munich where Rudolf Hess will pledge.
Margaret Pigg, a 10 year old of 2629 DeSiard street, fractured left thigh when struck by a car driven by Viola Singley, 416 Wood street, at about 5 30 Saturday afternoon. Singley posted bond 100 for reckless driving.
Baton Rouge February 24 Special The Louisiana State University hosted a banquet in the Venetian room of the campus cafeteria for local and visiting participants in the Southeastern athletic conference. President James Monroe Smith presided as host. About forty six guests enjoyed a lavish menu as the evening closed amid merriment and playful allusions to the past.
District Attorney Eugene Stanley plans to prosecute embezzlement under Louisiana law for deadhead payrolls in Orleans Parish. He notes many state officials and relatives receive pay for no service and suggests broader application of the statutes, including new hostesses at the state capitol.
In a Washington dispatch a Special correspondent recalls Rogers' remarks on U S policy in Nicaragua. He notes opposition to U S forces there and praises Marine aviators for rescue flights after the Managua earthquake, recounting a week with marines delivering supplies into the mountains.
J D Pate, a Los Angeles parachute jumper, died when his chute failed to open during the Natchez air meet opening at Joseph Sharpe airport. The accident occurred two miles from Natchez as he leaped from a plane piloted by J Q Dockery of Clarksdale. A large crowd witnessed the fatal fall at the two day event.
Spokane observers report that Western Retail Lumbermen's association urged small native sawmills to follow NRA manufacturers code and retail code. The measure, adopted with one dissent by W. B. Hussman of Cottonwood Idaho, argues adherence is essential for profitability.
O A Corbett 47 cashier of the Jonesboro State Bank died at a Shreveport sanitarium after a long illness. Funeral services set for Sunday in Jonesboro with burial in Jonesboro cemetery. Survived by widow two daughters Evelyn and Vivian Corbett Craft of Jonesboro two sisters Bertha Rue of Natchitoches and Annie D McDonald of Jonesboro and brother Pat Corbett of Alexandria.
New Orleans, Feb 24. The dock board fire fighting tug Samson Usted sank in the industrial canal ten minutes after colliding with the tug Sipsey of W. G. Coyle and company. Captain John W. Simonson and all seven crew members escaped to the canal bank as the Samson settled with a large hole torn in its port side near the canal mouth to the Mississippi River.
Thomas Edgar Griffith, 23, was killed at 3 AM after Griffith allegedly entered Levee sandwich shop and began shooting at Sam Z. Welch, who fired back in self defense. The coroner ruled justifiable homicide. Welch was wounded, Griffith deceased, funeral plans set for Sunday. Surviving family includes widow Dorothy Crow Griffith, one child, mother, sister and brother.
A one day relief institute for relief workers and Red Cross chapter officers will be held in Monroe on March to enhance disaster response. Sessions across 15 March events cover flood alarms weather reports evacuation life saving and refugee aid with discussion on Red Cross roles plans and policies.
In West Monroe the registrar reports a spike in registrations for the April 3 Democratic mayoral primary. Miss Lillian Collins notes 55 registrations on Saturday, bringing total since January 1 to 5 335, with one week left before the March 4 end of registration.
J. McClain an insurance agent was arrested in Baton Rouge and taken to Oberlin Louisiana to face bigamy and wire desertion charges filed by a woman in Allen parish. Sheriff Reed requested the arrest by wire to the local police chief. A Mrs McClain who has lived with him here said he is innocent and framed.
