A report describes a Communist riot on Koje Island Korea where 76 lives were lost among 5,900 prisoners in compound 62. An American soldier died from a fractured skull and 139 prisoners were injured.
Police booked W. M. Man W. A. Neal 47 of 807 Natchitoches Street after he passed out near Central Savings Bank on Trenton Street. He was taken to Charity Hospital and released before being jailed on drunken and disorderly charges with a $25 bond.
Three people were slightly injured in a two-vehicle crash about 8 p m three miles west of Monroe on Highway 80. James Hemphill 24 of Oak Grove La and his wife Lorraine 18 were treated for minor injuries at Charity Hospital and released. The Hemphill Mercury skidded and was hit by a 1951 Ford Victoria. the other driver was knocked unconscious but not seriously hurt.
Maj. William T. Whisner of Shreveport Louisiana shot down a MIG-15 in a dog fight that left him with five and a half confirmed MIGs in the Korean war. U S and Marine aircraft struck front line targets as 61 enemy shelters and 12 bunkers were destroyed. Marines reported enemy troops moving in winter camouflaged fields mistaken for snow. Front lines saw heavy mortar and artillery fire near Luke the Gook's Castle with over 200 shells on a frontline position. The Fifth Air Force tallies 10 MIGs destroyed and nine damaged in a week of fighting.
The Phantom Driver program in Monroe and West Monroe runs weekly to honor safe drivers with prizes from local merchants. Grand prize is a seven day seven night trip to Nassau Bahamas via Delta Airlines for the weekly winners, while the Monroe News-Star-World pays each winner five dollars. Police and sheriff departments back the safety drive amid 1951 Northeast Louisiana traffic deaths. winners will be photographed for the News-Star.
Communist negotiators charged the Allies with barbarous killings of 75 Korean prisoners and one U S guard at Koje Island. They protested and vowed to pursue further investigation, citing a riot tied to prisoner repatriation talks and pressuring for voluntary return of all prisoners.
Lisbon February 28 The Atlantic Nations approve a master plan for the biggest peacetime military buildup in history. An Allied defense wall of 45 to 50 divisions this year across Europe will rise to double by 1954 end. Cost exceeds 300 billion dollars. NATO TCC chaired by W. Arrell Harriman reports. Adopters aim to deter Communist attack with minimal debate.
The loss covering the Sherrouse School addition from the recent fire was signed by Warren F. Taylor and Don A. Baxter. Rebuilding will begin immediately with a target to finish by the 1951 52 opening. The final rebuilding cost for remaining portions is set at 152166.62.
Washington reports that Congress split views on the Army order reducing General MacArthur's staff from eight to three. Some call it small potatoes while others urge deeper Pentagon cuts. MacArthur declined comment as Col. Laurence E. Bunker disclosed the staffing change.
Ouachita parish school board postpones decision on completing West Monroe High School after learning 18 to 20 rooms are two inches smaller than specified. A committee will assess tearing down and enlarging steel walls or leaving them as is.
Campaign for Monroe city offices heats up with two announced candidates for mayor Jack Howard and George Tidwell and two for utilities and finance Fran Brennan and X Cline with Cline seeking re election. School board members Warren Taylor Court ney Oliver Mike John Jr Ronald Lee Davis and W L Ethridge Jr plan to seek or not seek reelection. St Matthew s School gears up for Mardi Gras ball with a gym venue and queen selection from a three person slate.
Hammond Louisiana February 23 thirty nine state highway department employees were dismissed after Appeal Judge Robert Kennon won the gubernatorial nomination. Thirteen were in Hammond and 26 in St Helena parish. District foreman Marcus Stafford said no reason was given for the Hammond dismissals. The district commissioner cited payroll cuts. A Greensburg source said the St Helena workers were fired for opposing Spaht.
Frank X. Cline announced his bid for re election to Monroe city commissioner of finance and utilities. He cited increased power plant capacity, modernized water and electrical systems, expanded distribution, ongoing water improvements, and improved bus service as achievements and promised a fuller platform of further improvements.
The Wage Stabilization Board announced a policy granting maximum latitude for retirement pension plans with no employer or worker contribution limits and no benefit caps. The rule enables automatic approval of many New Deal era plans long delayed, stated by WSB Chairman Nathan Fein Singer at a news conference.
Barbara Nemeroff a three year old girl was abducted from her home by a masked youth demanding 51 000 dollars. She was found unharmed walking with a 16 year old boy employed by her father near St Catherine Street. Police arrested the teen and recovered Barbara. The motive was unclear though a labor dispute with her father's firm was suspected.
