Atlanta speech by James J. Kilpatrick recalls 19th century interposition as a check on federal courts amid school integration. He argues current opposition is milder than the antebellum stir and urges states to assert sovereignty while denying nullification.
Margaret Lee of Monroe was elected vice-president of Phi Mu sorority at Louisiana State University for the coming year. A Neville High School graduate, she is a sophomore in education and a member of Westminster Fellowship, the YWCA, and the American Childhood Association. She is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Culbert Lee of 701 McGuire Monroe.
W G Haynes Jr and Richard D Hale are named co chairmen of the Ouachita Parish Red Cross Fund Membership drive. The 1956 goal is 42800 with about 700 volunteers. Richard Hale leads the advance gifts division as the drive opens March 1.
The National Education Association board adopted a resolution condemning Rep Adam Powell's proposed amendment shaping desegregation terms in federal school building legislation. NEA argues the rider would serve no useful purpose contradict Supreme Court gradualism and not hasten integration.
Hamilton Ontario February report says police tried to reach a Hamilton district couple driving through New York toward Florida for their 16 year old son George Johnson wounded in a hunting accident. The boy was in Hamilton hospital in serious condition. The note also mentions the U S population at the end of 1955 standing at 166 740 000.
Montgomery awaits grand jury action on a 12 week old Negro bus boycott as prosecutors consider indictments under an old 1921 law aimed at labor unrest. The probe centers on whether the bus protest was unlawful and seeks possible fines and jail terms for leaders and participants.
