The House Un American Activities Committee accuses Hollywood of failing to weed out Communists. Hearings since 1947 identified over 300 film figures as Communists or fellow travelers, and the industry did not lessen Communist infiltration, the panel states.
Red River Presbytery officers will present the charter at a gathering in the First Presbyterian Church on Wednesday night February 20. About 200 to 300 charter members are urged to attend a special meeting today at 2 30 o clock to elect officers and decide meeting place.
Enrollment at Northeast State for the spring term hits 652, registrar B S Hamner reports, a record for second-semester enrollments and outperforming the college’s previous senior and junior status terms.
Funeral services for 54 year old Dock P. Stephenson will be held at Corinth Baptist Church at 4 p m. He was killed Friday night when his car collided head on with a transfer van 7 8 miles west of West Monroe while en route to work at the Tuberculosis Sanitarium near Ruston. Interment will follow in Corinth Cemetery under Kilpatrick Funeral Home of Ruston supervision.
Washington reports Senator O Conor urges rejection of President Truman plan to grant immunity to witnesses via Newbold Morris. He warns such powers threaten regular practice and could endanger the constitutional right not to testify.
Spaht MeKeithen ticket rallies were held in Lake Providence Oak Grove Bastrop Farmerville Ruston Rayville and Winnsboro yesterday led by Judge Spaht John McKeithen and Congressman Otto Passman. Passman accused Kennon of tolerating goons and said he would keep campaigning until January 19. Spaht pressed his platform in several towns and planned a New Orleans statewide rally.
A 1 100 vehicle convoy from the 82nd Airborne Division will pass through Monroe on Tuesday and Wednesday en route to Fort Hood Texas for Exercise Longhorn. Local police will escort along Highway 80 and nearby streets for about two and a half hours. The march marks the unit's largest overland movement since World War II with routes via DeSiard road Louisville avenue Walnut street and South Grand.
New Orleans February 16 AP Louisiana chooses a governor Tuesday in a showdown between Earl K. Long and a coalition of opponents. Spaht of Baton Rouge and Kennon of Minden lead a nine candidate field with Spaht favored to carry the runoff as the Long era ends.
Victor Martzell, noted Catholic leader from Shreveport, will address the noon Jaycee luncheon as Brotherhood Week starts Monday. Mayor John E. Coon proclaims February 17-24 Brotherhood Week with broad religious organization participation in the Twin Cities. Wives will attend the luncheon with members.
In Orange Texas on February 16 a fourth army area armed forces disciplinary board will meet at Barksdale air force base near Shreveport to investigate complaints of illegal and unsanitary establishments in the area. Commander L T Cleaves of the Orange naval station and new board president said the focus is on places near Barksdale. the board aims to keep armed forces personnel out of undesired venues and can place off limits any such establishment catering to service members.
The Allied command, via Vice Adm. Turner Joy, tentatively accepted the North Korean proposal for a post armistice political conference but with conditions. Joy said acceptance requires the Reds acknowledge the UN as well as the Republic of Korea in recommendations, interpret foreign forces as non Korean, and understand the scope remains Korean problems.
Paris reports Premier Edgar Faure urged delaying west German troop recruitment until the treaty to form a united European army is ratified. The assembly approved a united west European army in principle but tied to German delay amidst Socialist opposition. The move comes as Europe faces premeeting pressures in London and Lisbon.
The U S 24th Infantry Division, first American unit in Korea, has come back to Japan for training with the U S military defense force. They previously occupied southern Japan before entering combat, with notable actions at Kum River and Taejon where Maj Gen William Dean was cut off and captured.
Northeast State music department launches its first instrumental music review on Thursday at 1 p m lasting three days. Guest artists Robert Bays John Patterson and Edgar Borup will perform with faculty and visiting instrumentalists. Lectures demonstrations and discussions are scheduled with private lessons in the Fine Arts building and a free music clinic for school bands and their students.
Ten former Ku Klux Klansmen were arrested in southeastern North Carolina on charges of kidnapping and civil rights violations. The group linked to the Fair Bluff Klavern allegedly roped and beat two white victims in October and crossed into South Carolina. Bail set at 5000 dollars each for hearings February 26 and 27.
