Case tosses new bombshell into inquiry

Senator Francis Case testified he received a forged telegram urging a vote for the natural gas bill. The committee opened a probe into whether attorney John M. Neff sought to influence Case and whether names were added to telegrams in Sioux Falls. Neff offered a campaign contribution after learning Case once favored the bill. Federal investigators and an FBI inquiry are involved.

Many Monroe Streets Damaged by Heavy Downpours

Commissioner Wayne Huckabay said many streets with old pavement were damaged by recent heavy rains. Some older blacktop streets are becoming impassable and may be sacrificed to gravel. Asphalt repairs await about two weeks of dry weather to dry the road bed. Some recent repairs deteriorated during a brief good weather period.

Labor Boss Meany Blasts Segregation Efforts In Schools

George Meany president of AFL CIO condemned Southern governors and congressmen for joining a so called Ku Klux Klan without hoods to resist the Supreme Court ruling on public school segregation. He said the brutal movement has spread to 44 states and includes governors U S senators representatives judges and local and state politicians.

Ex Red Describes Communist School In New York City

John Lautner a former Communist testified in Philadelphia that in 1941 he studied Marx Lenin and Stalin at a secret New York City school. He has worked as a paid government witness since leaving the party during the two weeks old trial of Dr Albert Blumberg the former Johns Hopkins instructor accused under the Smith Act.

Kefauver Hedges In Taking Stand On School Aid Bill

Senator Kefauver said he must study any anti segregation amendment and its effect on the school construction program before voting. He noted discussion with Rep Powell on attaching such an amendment and urged President Eisenhower to act in harmony with the Supreme Court order. Clergymen Cancel Plans For Miss U Religious Week

Three clergymen canceled scheduled speeches for the University of Mississippi Religious Emphasis Week over the Kershaw incident. The withdrawals included Rev. George Chauncey of Monticello Ark Rev. Western Allies Warn Russia Over East Berlin Violence

The United States Britain and France sent stern notes to Soviet Ambassador Georgi Pushkin warning that armed East German Communists threaten Berlin and that Western Berlin would be defended. The protest referenced a Jan. 5 parade in East Berlin with about 25,000 armed civilians and youths, some under 12, carrying submachine guns and carbines.

Six Crewmen Die In Bomber Crash At Ellsworth AFB

A modified B-47 RB-47 jet bomber crashed during takeoff from Ellsworth Air Force Base near Rapid City South Dakota on Friday killing all six crewmen aboard. The plane burst into flames on impact and portions of fuselage were found at a nearby ranch as smoke rose for over two hours. The aircraft’s home base was not immediately determined.

President Maintains Veto Threat On Rigid Farm Supports

President Eisenhower says he has not changed his opposition to rigid farm price supports despite the Senate Agriculture Committee approving a 1.1 billion soil bank and a return to 90 percent supports for corn cotton peanuts and millable wheat.
