Senate Republican Leader William F Knowland predicted Congress will cut upwards of 2 billion dollars from President Eisenhower s budget requests for the coming year. He said reductions could extend beyond non defense agencies and might trigger a review of spending programs across departments.
Washington reports Rep. Walter of Pennsylvania warns the danger of communism is increasing and that on American soil there are as many as 20 combat divisions worth of Communist propaganda, espionage, and subversion. He cites a 1956 committee report detailing a nationwide subversion campaign and the use of passports to move agents.
The House Armed Services sub committee considers a compromise on six months active duty for new guardsmen. Proposals include splitting training into two summers or a trial 11 week compulsory period with a year to reassess. Members Morris Winstead Norblad show varying support.
Sen O Mahoney said Secretary Seaton will be asked to testify about recommendations to cope with recent price rises in oil and gasoline. Seaton is to appear Thursday before a combined Senate Antimonopoly and Public Lands subcommittee chaired by O Mahoney.

Secretary of Agriculture Benson slashed about 200 million dollars from price support commitments affecting cotton oats rye barley sorghum soybeans flaxseed and cottonseed while dairy supports remain unchanged. A car carrying nine people plunged from a two-foot bank into the Miami River in Hialeah Gardens near Miami. Seven died and two escaped. Victims include Teresa Evans 22 George Evans 5 Henry Evans 4 Raymond Evans 2 Louis and Anthony Evans 6 months old twins Charles Wright 12 and Ralph Evans 50. Edwin McDonough 50 survived. Police say the group was en route from Evans home toward Miami Springs when the accident occurred.
