Southern Tenant Farmers' Union officials in Memphis report to Gov. Futrell that they will seek state militia protection after alleged mob violence at a Birdsong Arkansas rally. Four union speakers were reportedly escorted from the scene by Osceola officers to prevent trouble.
In New York on February 9, Dr. Sergius P. Grace of Bell Laboratories unveiled an electrical voice device. A pocket-size dry battery acts as a lung, a circuit provides breath, and a vibrating plate simulates vocal cords. The apparatus resembles a larger, skewed up side-down Dawes pipe and is designed to restore speech for those with surgically damaged vocal cords.
The post office considered adding a night air mail line between Atlanta and Dallas to provide two daily transcontinental schedules. Stops would mirror the day route from Charleston to Dallas, but night flying between Charleston and Atlanta is not yet feasible.

The Ouachita river gauge yesterday stood at 34.6 feet, rising steadily. It sits 5.4 feet below flood stage of 40 feet, with a 2.1 foot weekly increase prior to yesterday.
Tornadic winds raked east Texas and parts of Louisiana killing 12 people and injuring more than 70. A funnel cloud hit a Murray plantation community near Cleveland, Texas, destroying 31 tenant houses and leaving about 50 families homeless. Additional injuries reported in Mineola, Orange, and Marshall areas.
In Brookline police guard Ernest B. Dane III at his home as federal officials report a wave of kidnapping notes and ransom demands across eastern Massachusetts. U S Attorney says DOJ agents were not asked to investigate though notes cited include a demand for 1 million dollars.
Nine members of Company G 156th Infantry Louisiana national guard from Monroe arrived by train from Baton Rouge where they had served two weeks. Captain Louis F Rolleigh returned Friday night. Twelve men remained in Baton Rouge under Lieutenant Nance, with Baton Rouge as their home station. About forty five local guardsmen were taken to Baton Rouge two weeks ago. detachments returned to Monroe at intervals. The return of the twelve is expected within a few days.
Berlin reports Hitler in seclusion weighing Germany line of action on the Anglo-French accord and possible counter proposals. Reichswehr analysts say France may lengthen enlistment while Russia’s course influences future policy. Italy backs the Western security proposal with caveats about Britain and Italy’s special position.
The Duke of Gloucester aboard the cruiser Australia was diverted 300 miles north of Tahiti to monitor the Seth Parker radio schooner amid heavy seas. The Seth Parker sent word that all is well but its owner had been sleepless from continuous activity. The cruiser carried the duke toward Tahiti from Australia as the storm raged.
Dr. John W. Williams announces resignation as Ouachita parish health unit director. He will leave the post in late month after accepting a possible offer to head Asheville North Carolina public health. Dr. R W Todd of New Orleans confirms vacancy will be filled soon by a trained physician from the public health department.
Washington reports a rift between organized labor and the administration over recovery codes foreshadows a wider split on the 4.88 billion work relief bill. White House aides expect a hard battle on the floor as Congress weighs prevailing wage rules, while some predict Republicans and Democrats will unite to pass the measure as the House did.
A $40 million national defense program approved by administration aims to bolster army and navy bases in the Pacific. Funds from a $300 million public works package will go to shipyards dry docks and bases at Pearl Harbor Coco Solo Hawaii and west coast sites. The army plans nearly $11 million for an $18 million Hawaii air base and remaining funds for coast defenses guns and barracks.

The administration sent to Congress a plan showing fewer than a million people would be eligible for old age pensions with about 111 million dollars per year in state costs.
