Chicago reports a week long decline in commodity prices with stocks dropping sharply led by grains livestock butter eggs and cotton. The market fell to new lows versus the past year while government price supports appeared less effective as traders noted renewed weakness in grain prices and broad selloff.
Washington Feb 5 The Republican bid to quicken action on a filibuster killing rule change is blocked by Democrats. The Democratic caucus vowed to block Knowland s motion, saying they will not let Republicans run the Senate. Knowland seeks to move a two thirds gag rule to the calendar. Democrats oppose citing civil rights disputes and filibuster tactics. A heavy legislative week looms with administration bills and a trade measure ahead, Lincoln observances likely to affect the docket.
District Attorney Fred Fudickar Jr disclosed an annual report showing 852 cases disposed of in 1948, up from 613 in 1947. In Ouachita parish 464 convictions were secured and 371 the prior year. in Morehouse parish 105 convictions vs 115. Acquittals totaled 55 in Ouachita and 10 in Morehouse. 27 and 15 respectively in 1947. Nolle pros was 120 in Ouachita and 35 in Morehouse. 51 and 12 cases pending.
The Monroe fire department urged motorists to be more considerate of emergency operations and hoses laid across streets. Chief H. L. Hales cited drivers who run over hoses, risking hose damage, delayed calls, and potential loss of property or life as fire crews fight blazes. He warned repairs are costly and a break endangers firefighters during high pressure operations. Police often fail to respond quickly enough to fires, widening the danger window.
Warsaw reports crushed a foreign financed plot to kill government leaders amid a large roundup of home army veterans. The police said suspects were linked to the 1944 uprising and opposed Soviet domination, with hints of US intrigue. Prague also reports conspirators and trials in neighboring Czechoslovakia.

Despite bad weather, 2,364 students registered for the spring semester at Louisiana Tech by 10 a.m. Saturday. Late registration continues through February 9. Officials project enrollment may equal or surpass the 1948 spring total of 2,463, with last fall’s all time high of 2,673 students.
A Sanity hearing for J. D. Dowdy charged with dynamite murder of Walter Dorman on October 22 is scheduled for February 15 in sixth district court at Tallulah Louisiana. Dowdy and his father G. R. Dowdy face murder charges tied to destroying a fisherman's shack to cash insurance. Dowdy was captured near the Texas line after the blast. Defense counsels were appointed after Frank A. Blanchard withdrew.
State police said last night that no trace of Robert T. Richardson, 805 Georgia street, Swift and Co. salesman missing since January 28 has been found. Richardson's bloodstained auto was found abandoned near Georgetown on Highway 165 last Sunday.
Close associates of Acting President Li Tsung Jen said Communist forces answered his proposals for ending the civil war but offered no details. They noted no retreat from demands for unconditional surrender and a Communist broadcast questioned the government’s existence. Li's aides hoped the first step toward formal talks was taken, suggesting possible direct communication with the Reds. Shao Lit-Tze heads the government.
The five Brussels pact powers Britain France Belgium Netherlands and Luxembourg outline a council of Europe with a ministerial and consultative assembly but bar discussion of common defense. The move aims to avoid Soviet criticism by leaving mutual defense to the North Atlantic pact while the US and Canada discuss Western Europe security.
Mrs. W. R. Swinney of 800 Mitchell Lane West Monroe slipped on soap powder while scrubbing her kitchen floor yesterday afternoon. A pan struck her side as she fell and she was rushed by ambulance to Conway Memorial hospital with a severe side injury possibly broken ribs. Doctors taped the area and ordered an x ray Monday. the injury remains very painful.

Over 500 students enrolled for the spring semester at Northeast Junior College after a two day registration, though down from fall. Registrar B S Hamner said the drop is normal for the second term. New registrants include high school graduates transfers and a few special students. Registration extended to Monday for those ill or delayed. Veterans to bring eligibility certificates. Regular classes begin Monday with curricula across arts sciences agriculture engineering pre-med and other fields.
In Budapest Cardinal Mindszenty urged judges to grant wisdom in sentencing to aid world peace. Prosecutor seeks death for Mindszenty and six co-defendants on treason, espionage, and financial charges. Trial recess until morning as verdicts near. Mindszenty defends his conscience and loyalty to Hungary and the church.
Four cars of a southbound Missouri Pacific freight train derailed about four miles south of Wisner Louisiana. Cause unknown though soft track bed from recent rains and snow is suspected. No injuries. track expected to reopen by midnight and a northbound train was diverted by bus.
Baton Rouge February 5. LSU board of supervisors rejects a request to stage a charity pro football game at Tiger Stadium. The plan by the East Baton Rouge Lions Club would have featured the Chicago Bears against the Philadelphia Eagles. President Harold A. Stoke calls the idea unwise and setting a bad precedent. Board votes unanimously to refuse and authorizes a new faculty salary schedule for consideration at the next meeting.
Rep. Otto Passman of Louisiana is named on the House Appropriations Committee, pledging to push budget cuts. He criticizes the 1940s high spending level, supports some New Deal programs in theory but favors trimming funds, especially for the European Recovery Program, and advocates reducing federal employees from over two million.
