Lucius G. Hughes district agricultural marketing administrator and food stamp director died at 8:50 p.m. in a local sanitarium after about a week of illness. Born December 12, 1893 in Rome, Georgia, he moved to Monroe in 1920 to work as a salesman. He later worked in insurance, directed Ouachita Parish Welfare, and later led the government program. Young mother burned in wood stove accident at farm home
A 20 year old mother Mrs W D Lively of Lamkin five miles north of here on the Sterlington road is in grave condition at Monroe Charity hospital after her clothing ignited while she prepared a fire in a wood stove. She suffered third degree burns from her toes to above the waist while attempting to pour kerosene on the fire. The incident occurred late yesterday afternoon and left her with little hope of recovery.
