AFL CIO Sets 1958 Wage and Week Policy at Convention
AFL CIO delegates backed a 1958 policy calling for sizeable wage boosts and a shorter work week with enhanced fringe benefits. Walter Reuther led the drive, arguing purchasing power lag and inflation justify bigger gains and a balanced growth of productivity and pay. The plan rejects a wage freeze and counters a 40 hour week expansion proposal.
