AFL CIO Expels International Teamsters Union

The AFL CIO voted 5 to 1 to expel the International Teamsters Union over corruption charges led by President-elect James R. Hoffa. The tally was 10 458 598 for and 2 266 457 against after hours of debate. Hoffa, speaking from New York during a federal trial, said the ouster would not weaken the Teamsters and that they would remain part of organized labor. Four other unions face expulsion threats for corruption.

Four Airmen Die In Crash At Shreveport

A B 47 Stratojet crashed on takeoff from Barksdale AFB in driving rain, killing all four aboard. Capt. Jack E. Farquhar, Capt. John F. Dent, Capt. Jack W. Duncan, and First Lt. Carlton A. Boutelle were from the 352nd Bomb Squadron, 301st Bomb Wing, Strategic Air Command. Families lived in Shreveport. The plane, fuel laden, burst into flames and exploded after overrunning the runway during a navigational flight bound for Pinecastle AFB.

Two-Car Wreck Injures Three West of West Monroe

A head-on collision on a slippery hill seven miles west of West Monroe on U S 80 left three injured. Among the injured is Marvin Platt, 27, of Monroe, and a Mississippi couple. Platt spoke from St Francis Hospital about the crash last night.

Mississippi Auto Crash Near Sanford's Store Injures Five

An accident at the junction of State 15 and U S 80 near Sanford's Store involved a Mississippi car with Mr and Mrs H C Blount of Decatur and Platt of Monroe. All three main occupants suffered injuries with serious but not critical conditions reported. Two passengers in Platt's car escaped uninjured as ambulances rushed victims to St Francis. Weather was drizzly and roads wet. no charges filed as State Police continue investigation.

The Senate Rackets Investigating Committee heard that a Teamsters business agent was sent to shoot two nonunion truck drivers but was accidentally shot himself in the left arm near Maryville Tennessee on June 12 1953. Other testimony included a Knoxville driver whose home was bombed after refusing union enrollment and an ex member who described being punched by a man identified as Corky Ellis.

Mrs Shelby White of Mer Rouge recalls a successful program begun last year to adopt a veteran hospital ward. The group sends magazines, books, cookies and other items for about 40 men, who express gratitude in letters. Mayor W. L. Howard urged Monroe property owners to back the Capital improvement program calling it progress long overdue. At City Hall, bond attorney Harold Judell of New Orleans said the bond issue would add no more than three mills, a figure presented to reassure the public about the $9 million bond issue before the December 17 vote.

At the U.N. Security Council committee the watered down resolution to end the Algerian rebellion failed to pass with a 37 to 37 tie and six abstentions. France praised the result though it did not participate in the vote. Christian Pineau voiced satisfaction.

Vanguard Satellite Launch Fails at Cape Canaveral

Vanguard rocket explodes on its firing pad delaying the first U.S. satellite launch. The third stage failure stopped the bid to carry a satellite into orbit, with no injuries reported. Dr. John P. Hagen calls the incident a mechanical failure and says the program will continue.

Tragic Hamburg High School Fatal Crash Among Four Teens

New Fires Hit Ingram Refinery

New fires threatened the Ingram Oil and Refining Co in St Bernard Parish but were extinguished after a two hour battle. The plant suffered prior explosions and fires Wednesday causing one death and about one million dollars in property damage. Firefighters smothered today's flames with chemicals after authorities called for all available help.
