A special session of the Fifth district Legionnaires will meet at 9 30 a m today at the Memorial Legion Home to elect a new district commander after J Eldon Doughty of Jonesville resigned. State Commander Robert L Browne ordered the session following a ruling that the district executive committee lacked authority to choose a successor without full post ballots. Doughty was elected for a two year term last April in Monroe. District vice commanders George Dewey McKnight and Humble Zeigler will preside and are expected to seek the post, with any district Legionnaire eligible to run.

West Monroe Sheriff’s Deputy Allen Dies From Gun Wound
J. W. Allen a 70 year old West Monroe resident and Ouachita parish sheriff's deputy died from an apparent self inflicted gun wound at home after a month long illness. The body was found after his wife heard an explosion and saw him on the bed with a .38 revolver nearby. Funeral services are set for 10 a m Monday at First Methodist Church with interment at Memorial Park Cemetery. He is survived by his wife a son and a daughter.
