In Shreveport Louisiana T. J. Childress about 70 residing with his niece Mrs E G Huckaby ended his life by hanging in the garage at the home. Ill health was cited as the cause. He was found by his niece during a search after he went missing from the house.
The $250 million administration tax bill cleared last congressional barriers and moves for presidential approval. Rep. Crowther says the measure is a political gesture as the House and Senate agreed on a conference report. The bill increases surtaxes on top incomes estates and gifts while stiffening corporate taxes, diverging from the president’s June 19 proposal. In Jackson Mississippi voters head to the polls Tuesday to nominate a governor and several state officials amid a bitter runoff featuring Paul Johnson and Hugh L White with Huey Long as a central issue in the campaign.
Emperor Haile Selassie urged Ethiopians to prepare for air raids as Britain concentrates Mediterranean forces near the Suez Canal. In other fronts, Ethiopia began frontier trench construction while Italian troops massed in the mountains for dawn maneuvers and a grand sendoff from Naples marked departures for Africa.

A Southern Railway train struck the Grimes car at Robinson crossing near Loudon Tennessee, killing Will 36 Johnny 16 Claud 14 and Ruby 18 instantly. Mrs Jennie Grimes died later at Harrison Memorial hospital while a fifth passenger was fatally injured. The crossing is marked as dangerous and a distant relative witnessed the tragedy.

A Lincoln parish posse chased Cletus Gray 22 described as tall, very black with an upper gold tooth after he fired four shots at L. D. Allen near Calhoun and Choudrant. The white man was uninjured. Sheriff A. J. Thigpen offered a 25 dollar reward for information leading to Gray’s arrest.
Six masked robbers held up a state department of revenue office in downtown Philadelphia, bound seven men, and escaped with 1500 dollars in tax receipts. The lone woman unbound remained on the floor as the thieves searched the open safe and prepared the money for shipment to Harrisburg. The raid occurred on Broad Street near City Hall.
Berlin August 24. Jews were barred from trolley cars in Magdeburg today as new restrictions cause hardship for thousands. Signs read Jews not wanted on streetcars. Jewish customers faced late night deliveries by Karschin meat dealers and reliance on mail and freight for necessities from Berlin amid edicts against Aryans trading with Jews.
A convoluted wrangle over a third deficiency bill and loan riders for cotton and wheat sparks a Senate House clash threatening adjournment and social security funding. The Senate rescinded a sine die adjournment, voting to return the measure to the House as leaders caution about midnight adjournment.
The commerce department reports a 2 percent rise in exports and a 13 percent rise in imports from June to July, defying the usual decline. Both totals exceed July last year, but the surge in imports widens the unfavorable trade balance. Machinery vehicles tobacco wood paper and chemicals boosted exports, while vegetable foods beverages sugar and crude rubber drove import gains.
Countess Haugwitz Reventlow formerly Barbara Hutton and her husband split time between the Lido and their Grand Canal hotel. A private motor cruiser ferries them to Lido Beach up to twice daily and they dine with friends at the hotel roof gardens, rarely going out at night.
