Governor M E Thompson ordered state police to investigate the beating of union organizer Wilbur Gupton and his wife in LaGrange Georgia and said swift prosecution would follow. He pledged action against violence by small groups and directed the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to confer with C I O director Charles Gillman.
A warrant was issued for Robert Hale of Shreveport by District Attorney Edwin L. Brewer. Hale, a former bus company employee, is accused by R. N. Conklin and R. A. Lockhart of being in a two car group that stopped two men on the old Morningsport road Thursday and beat them for crossing the picket line at the Southern Trailways bus office.
Three American servicemen detained after crossing the 38th parallel in Korea are to be released today at the line of demarcation. The men are Tommy F. Pugsley, Renton Washington. Joan D. Hopfe, Seattle. and Gerald K. Geffen, Port Chester New York. An interview was planned on return to Seoul and the case had previous protest notes filed by the United States. Maj. Gen. Albert F. Brown announced a proposal for an internationally supervised general election in Korea.
Moscow radio reports Soviet Foreign Minister Molotov has agreed to U S Secretary of State Marshall's plan for a joint Korea commission report. He says the commission should limit consultations to organizations with more than 10,000 members and that both governments should discuss steps to fulfill the Moscow decision.
Britain ordered the 4400 Jews of the Exodus moved toward Germany with possible force to return them to France by rail. The Jewish Agency for Palestine filed habeas corpus against British officials, hoping to block shoreing outside British territory. The refugees, blocked from entering Palestine, remained aboard as reports continued.
Rep. Nixon urges creation of a labor czar to settle internal labor disputes and jurisdictional conflicts fueling strikes. He writes to CIO President Murray and AFL Chief Green, proposing a single authority to assign work among crafts and reduce spurious strikes.
Berlin report states a fire aboard a train traveling between Velten and Kremmen in the Russian zone north of Berlin killed 24 people and injured 49. Fire spread rapidly through the crowded coach causing panic with several seriously hurt.
Louisiana labor leaders announce a united front with the U S AFL and CIO to challenge the Taft Hartley Act. Holt Ross says labor will test the act and push on constitutional grounds while building cross group political action in Louisiana.
The Twin Cities secured a new industry as contracts for the Selig furniture factory were awarded. Armco of Baton Rouge will supply a prefabricated building for $98,000 and Gilbert Brothers of Monroe will handle interior work and equipment for $121,162. Total cost rises to about $284,000 with overages to be funded by Monroe Realty Corporation.
A 45 year old man shot it out with two burglars in his Nashville area home early today. He sustained a minor head abrasion from a blackjack. One dead is identified as Blanton Kephardt 34 ex convict. the other is unnamed, sought by FBI.
Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd aged 59, the famed explorer, was admitted to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore for study and diagnosis after returning last April from his second South Pole expedition. His condition was listed as satisfactory and no operation is expected.
Three white inmates fled Parchman state prison in Mississippi with a high powered rifle. They forced a woman to stop her car outside Webb and drove away eastward. Escapees were Clanton Lee a life term murder convict, Reimer Lee Parham 36 serving 10 years for armed robbery, and Charles T Brown 23 jailed for burglary and larceny.
London reports 10 missing after a four engine BOAC flying boat crashes on alighting in Bahrein. The craft carried 24 aboard from Hong Kong to London with seven passengers and three crew members initially unaccounted for. Lord Stanley of Alderly and Air Commodore Allen Hesketh were among the rescued.

Roy Chadwick designer of Britain's Lancaster bomber was killed in a crash during an experimental flight of the Luxurious Tudor IL at Woodford Airport. A tropical storm nears the Texas coast with 75 mph winds and potential hurricane strength. The weather bureau warned it could strike near Galveston by dawn and urged precautions along a coast from Matagorda to High Island.
Washington reports rival forecasts from Senators Sparkman and Millikin on the 1948 Senate balance. Millikin predicts Republicans will keep 18 seats at stake and gain more. Sparkman says Democrats will hold 14 seats and win four additional to seize the Senate.
A single engine army trainer from Fort Benning Georgia crashed into a hillside two miles east of Galax Virginia killing all four occupants. Wreckage spread over 150 yards as first responders found mangled bodies in a pasture on the M T Dalton farm atop the Blue Ridge near Laurel Fork.
Senator Theodore G. Bilbo was buried near Poplarville Mississippi after funeral services. Pastor D W Nix urged that Bilbo's senatorial mantle pass to his son Lieut Col Theo G Bilbo Jr, praising Bilbo as a champion of true Americanism and martyr to the cause.
At Quitandinha Brazil Aug 23 Argentina opposes force use by hemispheric allies without unanimous consent. Argentine delegate Pascual La Rose says joint action requires unanimity and would block a 20 nation inter American pact. He supports referring aggression to UN Security Council and a later American states meeting for consultation.
Reports from Washington London and Paris say four power discussions on German and Austrian peace treaties may restart in New York during the U N general assembly set to open September 16. Molotov is seen as pivotal with Paris London and Washington awaiting decisions on attendance and timing.
Nineteen coal miners perished in an explosion at Morrison North mine in Ainfield Plain England. Only five survivors suffered burns and injuries as undertakers and relatives struggled to identify the victims. William Younger described a silent blast sending hot air and dust through the mine.
