Ashe County reports Martin Moore a gaunt six six former hotel hall boy was found guilty of shooting Helen Clevenger in Battery Park hotel July 16 and sentenced to die in the gas chamber October 2. Judge Don Phillips praised the jury and Moore thanked them.
R C McCutcheon 69 foreman for R O Marks contractor was killed at noon when a switch engine of the Louisiana and Arkansas railroad struck him in the Silverlake bottom yards. He was directing excavation for the Cotton Belt railroad and stepped onto tracks unaware of the approaching train. The engine dragged him several feet before stopping.
Eric Waller of Dodson Louisiana won the Future Farmers of Texas Oklahoma and Louisiana public speaking contest in Arlington. His topic was Conserving The Soil. Other winners were Louis Rice of Frederick Oklahoma and A B Yearwood of Stephenville Texas.
Democratic voters in Mississippi head to the polls Tuesday to decide the fate of five of nine Congress members and the senior senator. Wall Doxey is renominated without opposition, Robert Dunn does not seek re election, and Bilbo remains a 1940 term senator. The primary focuses on congressional seats as Pat Harrison and Sennett Connner contest the senatorial nomination.
Shreveport Louisiana August 22 P Dinkins a young cowboy and broncho buster admitted he had stirred trouble by offering to marry Miss Charlotte Thompson of London who had written to Governor Henry Blood of Utah seeking a cowboy. He said he will focus on broncho riding for now and leave romance to others.
Police arrested Carl Dixon a 1 year old white man of 211 Jefferson street after a complaint from P B Brooks of Belzoni Miss. Dixon allegedly confessed to stealing from cars for five months listing recovered items. Brooks reported two coats stolen from his car near the Frances hotel while he breakfasted. Dixon identified by Brooks wearing one coat at arrest and carrying the other coat and a shirt wrapped as a parcel at headquarters.
Robert Crabbe aged 40 leaped into Hurricane creek in a small fishing boat when a moccasin approached. He did not surface after the plunge and drowned. Eddie Gowens, his fishing companion, recovered the moccasin and reached shore. Divers recovered Crabbe's body today.
The Navy Department announced a perfect score on the standard marine pistol marksmanship test at Parris Island South Carolina yesterday. Major William P. Richards of Spokane Washington, a 1917 Naval Academy graduate, achieved the first flawless showing in service history. Major General John H. Russell sent congratulations. The test comprises 45 shots including slow fire rapid fire and a bobbing target.
A compromise order issued by Harvey G. Fields extends until January 1 1997 the reduction of minimum natural gas rates by a dollar for users on side West Monroe at Brown and Bawcomville. The order follows litigation by A S Nappier against the Natural Gas company and will be signed at the commission's next meeting.
Baton Rouge August 22. Parish units of the emergency relief administration verify data in old age assistance cases to support a joint state federal and parish school security program. Harry J. Early says work should finish by September 1. He notes misperceptions about eligibility and says aid goes to those over 65 with insufficient means and who meet other requirements.
Henry Padgett, 24, collapsed from a heart attack while announcing a radio program over Station KMLB. He was found slumped in the control room at 10:30 Saturday morning and died shortly after. Born in Dixon Tennessee, he studied at Centenary College in Shreveport and sang on WSM Nashville before joining the Lloyd Huntley orchestra. He had lived in Monroe for two years and was widely known in radio circles.
In Moscow 16 conspirators against Stalin hear prosecutor demand their lives as the government rests its case. Several defendants collapse and refuse mercy, while others vow to meet execution. One official linked to the plot dies at home amid the climax of the trial.
L. P. Abernathy, chairman of the state highway commission, outlined Monroe area projects funded by a forthcoming $30,000,000 bond issue to be voted on next November. Plans include concreting highway 204 from Bastrop to the Arkansas line, a Sumner Rouge to Bonita route with a federally funded overpass, and completion of the Alta to Mangham concrete road. The Ouachita parish to Alta segment is under construction.
Tyrmadge Bradford 21 and Norma Leen Squires 4 drowned in Dor cheat baydu three miles west of Minden at 3 30 p m. Their motor boat sank after the motor stopped. Five others aboard were rescued including Robert Longster Edith Thompson Jim Billa Thompson Grant Scouves and May Kennedy. Local residents aided as the boat began to sink and a child was rescued from the bank.
Floyd B Olson Minnesota’s Farmer Labor governor dies at Mayo Clinic Rochester age 44 after stomach illness. Survived by wife and daughter Patricia with aides and nurses nearby. crowd gathers outside the hospital as final news comes.
Domel dispatches report a well organized bandit army attacked Fusung near the Korean border in Manchoukuo. They overpowered a Japanese garrison killing 32 Japanese subjects including three soldiers and two policemen and 27 civilians. Two Manchoukuan hostages were taken before Japanese bombing planes forced the raiders to retreat. An infantry column later retook Fusung as bandit activity rises in the region.
Easterwood of Monroe and Radmond Jarred of Estill suffered fractures in a highway 80 crash four miles east of Catfish after two cars driven by E B Welch of Monroe and B J Stafford of Estill collided. Both vehicles were badly damaged and all four occupants received cuts and bruises. Easterwood was treated at the Monroe hotel by a physician for a broken wrist.
J L Keenan of Monroe was elected president of the Louisiana Hotel association at a New Orleans convention, succeeding Seymour Weiss. Federal economists report a 24 percent rise in Canada to United States farm product exports in the first half of the year under the reciprocal trade treaty. Agricultural trade shows identical gains in imports, with Canada benefiting from citrus and other commodities. Overall 1936 farm exports to Canada totaled 45.95 million dollars, up from 28.90 million, while non agricultural goods rose to 123.89 million.
