Eyewitnesses said a young man was shot by machine pistol fire and dragged by border guards from near Checkpoint Charlie as a West Berlin border clash erupted. A young woman escaped to the West while panicked crowds mourned with crosses and flowers. U S military police patrolled near the wall.
Linda Duplissey of Winnsboro was named queen of the Deep South Rodeo in Winnsboro. First runner-up was Mary Beth Goss of Natchez Riding Club. second runner-up Charlotte Swayze of Sterlington Riding Club. Last year’s queen Diane McCain presented the award. stock furnished by Kinney Brothers of Sulphur.
Mrs. Girlinghouse died after months of illness and funeral services were held at Manifest Baptist Church with burial in Heard Cemetery under Kinner's Funeral Home. Survivors include husband Albert G Girlinghouse and siblings. In Bastrop one day old Douglas Hayes Butler died at Morehouse General Hospital with graveside funeral at Forest Cemetery. Burial by Gay's Funeral Home. Survivors include parents Albert H and Mrs. Butler and extended family.
In Lincoln Parish a 5 year old Choudrant man, Claude B. Smith, died from self inflicted injuries after walking into Choudrant Creek while fishing with friends. He cut a vein in his left arm and stabbed himself near the heart. He died en route to hospital and his body was sent to Hixson Brothers Funeral Home in Monroe.
Teresa Taylor 27 died on arrival at E A Comer Memorial Hospital after a reported attack inside their Monroe apartment. Henry Taylor 30, listed as Baton Rouge, was booked with murder. Neighbor H P Webb was stabbed while trying to intervene. The attack occurred around 7 30 p m and led to Taylor's apprehension near Texas Avenue and Short Street.
Northeast Louisiana State College and colleagues attend a National Science Foundation sponsored conference at the University of Miami to deepen mathematical study, including work at the university’s Scientific Computing Center. Also notes on Rev Cantrell gold en wedding anniversary and locals visiting Monroe and Ruston, plus W R Townson’s hospital stay and health update.
A couple from California, Janice L. Rowe 22 and Richard Rowe 23, were injured when their car left Highway 9 west of West Monroe, rolled several times, and was a total loss. Mrs Rowe suffered severe head lacerations and shock and was taken to St Francis Hospital, while her husband had a broken finger. They were en route to Fort Benning, Georgia. The woman was believed asleep at the wheel. No charges expected. The pair are assigned to Fort Benning.
Betty Tatum McDougle 69 died Saturday in a local nursing home after a long illness. Native of Union Parish she leaves a son Richard Jones Odessa Texas a daughter Edna Sharpe Wilmington California a sister Iea Bowen Farmerville and seven grandchildren. Arrangements for services were pending awaiting out-of-state relatives.
