Louisianians Reach $3 Billion in 1951 Earnings

The Department of Commerce reports Louisianians earned about $3 billion in 1951 with personal incomes totaling $2,128,000, a 10 percent rise from 1950. The state's per capita income was $1,135, about 72 percent of the national per capita, as national income payments climbed to $243 billion.

Scooter Crash Harms 22 Year Old In Monroe

A 22 year old Negro man, Robert Barfield, was seriously injured when his motor scooter collided with a Dr Pepper Bottling company truck. He sustained a broken right arm head and leg lacerations and multiple bruises. Driver Carl A. Francis, 36, was making a left turn. he was uninjured.

Navy to Launch Cross-Country Balloon Experiments

The Navy announced a series of unmanned 37 foot balloons to study atmospheric radio wave propagation using onboard electronic gear. Launches will begin next Monday near Talamit Oregon and travel west to east across the United States with four or five more flights planned later this month or in early September.

Youth Arrested For Bike Theft In West Monroe

A youth in West Monroe was arrested after allegedly stealing a bicycle from a friend’s yard Thursday night. The youth tried to start the bike, pushed it to a nearby service station, and called a repair shop to fetch it. Police and the repair shop owner nabbed the youth when he called again Saturday morning. John Schepis of West Monroe, the bike’s owner, is out of town and unavailable for comment.

Neville High School announces start of registration for new and transfer students on Monday. Principal Paul J. Neal notes 972 pupils registered for the 1952-53 session. returning students need not reregister. First timers must obtain transcripts from prior schools and lockers will be assigned near home rooms. Preschool registration runs Monday through Friday. a teachers workshop is Sept 2–4. classes start Sept 5 at 8:30 a.m. Free city transportation will be provided with routes announced later.

Lewis Calls 475000 Miners to 5 Day Stop Work

John L. Lewis told 475,000 coal workers to halt work for five days starting August 25 in a memorial stoppage. The move, aimed at strengthening bargaining leverage, commemorates miners killed in pit disasters and follows contracts due to expire at end of September. Firnberg Home Gutted By Fire

A fire of undetermined origin last night gutted the Firnberg residence at 2708 South Grand Street. Firemen from Engines 102 and 104 battled the blaze for hours, rescuing an unidentified person as they prevented spread to adjacent homes. The brick house stood with its sides charred but intact.
