Communist troops advancing from the Cambodian border attacked five American positions north of Saigon and shelled the capital with rockets and mortars. US casualties rose to about 200 dead and 1,000 wounded as fighting spread near the border and along an arc to Saigon.
Sniper fire kills a British soldier and spurs 17 hours of street fighting in Belfast areas Falls Road Crumlin Road and Shankill. Police report two dead and 24 wounded at 3 am with toll since Monday seven dead 416 injured. Army consoles off Catholic Divil Street and Crumlin Road while looting and arson spread to York Road and Newry baricades form to the calm on Sunday.
West Monroe High School Principal S R Braley and Qua chita Parish Superintendent James Lancaster disputed a report that Braley was asked to step down. Lancaster offered Braley the director post of a new Special Education Center at Tim Tippit School, which Braley declined citing insufficient knowledge of the area.
Don Hicks and Drexler Albritton arrived back in Monroe after a two day trip to New Orleans Lafayette and Baton Rouge. They toured Bourbon Street and other landmarks while away. Both drive for Geno's Ambulance Service.
Library users may borrow materials today as Ouachita Parish Public Library branches plan weekend access. The system will close tomorrow and also be closed on the other Sundays in August while hours extend to 5 p.m. today.
Reacting to public pressure, the USDA plans to curb usage of several pesticides including DDT. The roundup notes a broad, cross‑party push in Congress to fund water pollution efforts beyond current budgets.
Dr Jack E Smith of Montgomery was named principal of Neville High School replacing Jerry Lee who resigned last month. Smith, 37, holds a BA and MEd from Northwestern State College and an EdD from the University of Arkansas. He taught social science 1954 1961, was assistant principal at Verda 1961 1967, and county guidance counselor in Grant Parish 1968 1969. He is a former president of the Grant Parish Teachers Association, Phi Delta Kappa member, Baptist, married with one child.
Hurricane Camille lashed western Cuba with 115 mph winds, flooding rains, and thousands evacuated. It moved toward the open Gulf of Mexico as Debbie formed in the Atlantic, threatening Florida while Cuba's crops face heavy damage and relief efforts spread along the coastline.
Dr. J Harvey Walthall released Monroe City School System desegregation details showing white students remaining in their current urban schools and zones mapping minority attendance. The plan does not yet specify numbers and requires a city plan for full desegregation by Feb 1, 1970 while MInnie Ruffin and Lexington remain all white.
A Friday shower at Selman Field Monro e ends the August drought with 0.25 to 0.50 inch rain. A 30 percent chance of more rain today, 20 percent tonight, partly cloudy skies, warm weekend with 40 to 60 percent sunshine. Highs near 92, lows around 70, winds 5 to 15 mph.

A trainload of World War I poison gas, barred from a short Canada route, rolled across the northern United States toward a New York factory to be converted for peaceful use. A second shipment of liquefied phosgene gas moved toward a Geismar Louisiana plastic plant at 30 miles per hour, routed through Tennessee and Mississippi.
The Department of Sanitation sent a Mississippi man a sample of ticker tape from the moon parade in New York. Michael Mulhern of Vicksburg, a collector of odds and ends, requested the material in a letter.
