ELISABETHVILLE forces on two separated fronts recaptured Baudouinville and Kabongo from Communist backed rebels in the eastern Congo. The victories follow the rebels’ advance and the fall of Stanleyville amid reports of Gaston Soumialot’s control claims.
Abby, the season’s first named tropical storm, developed suddenly Friday in the Gulf of Mexico. The map shows its location and forecasted path toward the Texas coast.
Abby, the season’s first tropical storm, struck Matagorda Texas with 65 mph gusts and 8 to 10 inches of rain. No deaths or injuries were reported. Damage was scattered and light, with toppled antennas, ripped awnings, and trees down as residents along Matagorda Bay returned home. The storm weakened west of Victoria as forecasts warned of gusts up to 60 mph in nearby areas. Inland thunderstorms in Bowie caused heavier damage with a wall collapse and flooded streets.

Premier Nguyen Khanh declared a state of full emergency across South Viet Nam warning of possible attacks. Khanh urged North Viet Nam to overthrow its Communist rulers and pledged aid.

A Titan IIIC rocket motor at UTC’s Coyote test center ran two minutes for a static test but the tail end blew off with 10 seconds remaining. Officials said the test met objectives despite the explosion and minimal damage to the stand. The 75 foot tall rocket generated data on thrust temperature vibration and thrust vector. The test rattled homes in Santa Clara Valley and followed a May 2 Edwards AFB explosion.
Congress backed President Johnson in the Southeast Asia crisis. The House passed 414 to 0 and the Senate 88 to 2 in support of the president as commander in chief. Morse and Gruening opposed, with Gruening questioning Viet Nam’s value and Morse warning against unchecked acts of war. Johnson praised the unity and resolve shown by lawmakers. Goldwater supported the action but did not debate. Aiken cited misgivings yet endorsed the president’s role.
Residents face continued warmth as forecasts call for scattered afternoon thundershowers this weekend. Two rain hopes linger: a Gulf hurricane weakening westward and a northeast cold front moving through Arkansas. If the front reaches northeast Louisiana showers are likely. otherwise no heavy rain, with highs of 90 to 95 and lows around 72 to 76. Friday topped at 95 and dipped to 70. Southeast winds 5 to 15 mph.
A 54 year old Baskin woman Josie Wallace died Friday after a two vehicle crash at Pine and 4th streets in West Monroe. Joyce Wallace 20 of Bastrop was a passenger in the Wallace car which had seven occupants. Robert A. Lee 21 of West Monroe drove the jeep. Police cited a possible stop sign violation by the Wallace car. Coroner cited multiple internal injuries. Funeral arrangements will be announced. Survivors include five brothers and three sisters.
Washington reports Friday night showed no signs of a Communist military reaction to the U S retaliation against North Vietnamese bases. High U S officials said the absence of sea, air, or troop movements suggests the Reds will not widen the war. Propaganda claims by Hanoi were viewed as possible face saving for domestic consumption.
A Jennings born construction worker Henry Young about 50 died from an electrical shock while welding a rice dryer near Bonita on Friday He worked for James Stewart Construction Co of Jennings which is building rice bins and dryers about eight miles from Bonita in a hazardous incident report from the area
Around 135 graduates at Northeast Louisiana State College will receive degrees in commencement at Brown Stadium on campus. Gov John J McKeithen will address the ceremony at 6 30 p m. A reception for graduates families and friends will follow in the College Union Building main lounge. The invocation and benediction will be given by Rev W Bradley Trimble rector of Grace Episcopal Church Monroe. Special music by Myra McComb Porter accompanied by Eloise Calhoun Stanhope.
Exhausted Mrs. Carpenter watched as seven of her eight children at Garland General Hospital underwent tandem tonsillectomies in an assembly line setup. Two doctors and nurses moved children through the procedures as the family prepared for the eight child’s operation.
The House approved a major anti-poverty bill for President Johnson by a 228-190 roll call, with final passage delayed to Saturday to allow a final vote on the measure. The 947.5 million plan funds camps, education, job training, loans, and community anti-poverty projects, and includes a loyalty oath for youths entering the job corps.
