Preliminary shots exchange between Eisenhower and Stevenson camps. Stevenson questions if Ike’s crusade serves office over principle and accuses his opponent of attaching party winners to a broadened crusade. Summerfield attacks Stevenson as drifting toward socialism while Truman weighs a bare knuckle tour for Stevenson.
In Montreal's Bordeaux jail hundreds of prisoners rioted, setting 17 fires and fighting 200 police in a two hour battle. Tear gas and gunfire were used to restore order, with a dozen or more convicts injured. This followed prior food riots last May. Provincial police said order was restored after the outbreak.
The first class of practical nurses will enter St Francis sanitarium Monday for clinical experience. S. W. Jackson, director of Ouachita Valley Vocational school, says 22 students will be supervised by Mrs Jimmie Miller, a registered nurse and instructor. This marks the second phase of the program extending one year. Students wear white blouses and grey jumpers. A new class will also open at the West Monroe main school under Mrs Esta Bowman, R N, with students from Monroe, West Monroe, Baskin, Winnsboro and Bastrop.

Two burglaries were reported in Monroe with goods valued at 79 dollars taken from Mary Branch’s Adams Street home. Detectives, noting similar methods to the prior robbery, believe they know the culprit but have not arrested anyone. James Anderson Jr. was taken into custody after allegedly stealing a purse and nine dollars and fifty cents.
Louisiana oil marketers say the two cent per gallon gasoline tax reduction will take effect at midnight August 31. Local rep Jimmy Moore said earlier reports that the cut began August 1 were erroneous and blamed confusion for stations not lowering prices.

C C Bell Jr who resigned as West Monroe mayor cites tax relief during his term. He notes millage fell from 27.3 to 21.6 mills and predicted one more cut to 18.8 mills. He accuses a governor linked group of appointing three aldermen to block city progress. Continued on fifth page.
Louisiana's first bale of cotton from Bearwallow plantation near Lake Providence sold for 60 cents per pound on the Memphis market, about 20 cents above regular price. Grown by Walter Har low Crews, the 500 pound bale was ginned earlier the week. Lake Providence Chamber of Commerce and local farmers held a celebration awarding about $700 in prizes and services to Crews.
The Monroe City Council and engineers surveyed last week at Commissioner Huckaby’s request to inform the council and public. They found city streets badly in need of mending and gutters to clear, with concrete ditches overgrown and blocked reducing drainage and threatening health. The streets and parks department lack adequate equipment, and the city barn is structurally unsound with a dirt floor.
J F Pop Lively of West Monroe topped an 18 week Twin City Safety Contest earning a five day all expenses paid trip to Nassau via Delta Airlines. He received a $50 check from Monroe News Star World editor Wilson Ewing and was honored for the highest final safety test score among over 30 participants. Continued on sixth page.

Mrs. Azel McMillian, indicted by the parish Grand Jury for murder, was hospitalized late Friday at St. Francis Sanitarium. Guards were posted in the hospital as she remains in parish jail. no trial date set. Dudley McMillian, 50, a used car dealer, was her husband.

A Ruston man Oscar Aulds 55 was hospitalized after his car collided head on with an oncoming vehicle near Choudrant. Alvin Giles 45 also of Ruston was attempting to pass a car and is being held for investigation by state police.
