President Roosevelt radioed dinner crowds urging the Democratic Party to nominate a liberal pair on a forward looking platform. He attacked Republicans for frightening the country and warned against a third term talk while saying the nation must stay out of wars in Europe and Asia.
Paul V. McNutt federal security administrator praised the Roosevelt administration and contrasted its achievements with Republican promises. He hinted at a future Democratic presidential bid, arguing the era has seen broad government programs to aid the unemployed and relieve distress while rebutting GOP criticism. He cited debt and relief figures to defend New Deal policies.
More than 150 mayors and municipal officials will attend the third annual Louisiana State Conference of Mayors and Municipal Officials in town Friday and Saturday April 26 and 27. Mayor Harvey H. Benoit of Monroe announced the full two day program with registration Friday at 9 am at the Frances hotel and a welcome address by Mayor J. Maxine Roy of Lafayette.
Jacqueline Cochran announced a new official national mark of 292.6 mph for 100 kilometers near Acomita New Mexico. She believed she had surpassed 300 mph but engine heat forced throttle back midcourse. She flew a Republic Aviation built low wing single seater.
London reports successful Allied land sea and air actions in Norway as Britain claims two merchant ships lost and two German transports torpedoed. Oslo warns of dreadful retribution, Stockholm notes German advance halted, Paris pursues Mediterranean entente, Bucharest gains German munitions access.
The national labor relations board says 16,124 votes favored the Brotherhood of Consolidated Edison Employees, 9,729 for the C I O group, with 2,930 ballots for neither in a vote among 31,500 workers. The Brotherhood formed three months earlier.
Jackson Mississippi April 20 A 32 year old Choctaw county high school instructor Boyce Taylor is hospitalized in critical condition after a beating in the Chester school science lab. Police say Bryan McKnight and his younger brother L M McKnight, classmates of Taylor, are jailed. Taylor says he disciplined the younger brother who attacked him with a stool. the elder struck him with a metal experiment stand during the struggle.
Berlin reports a 15000 ton British transport and a cruiser sunk in central Norway near Romsdalsfjord by German bombers. British landings at Aldalsnes were attacked as observers claim German air power will thwart Allied cooperation on Norwegian soil.
The Louisiana State Dental Society installed Dr. S. D. Gore of New Orleans as president for the upcoming year and named New Orleans the next convention city. Dr. Gore succeeds Dr. N. G. Gaston of Monroe, with Dr. B. Robinson of Sulphur as president-elect for 1941. Other officers include Dr. John Foster of Homer first vice president, Dr. L. R. Adams of Columbia second vice president, Dr. J. S. Bernhard of Shreveport secretary, and Dr. O. J. Ory of Garyville treasurer. The meeting considered board expansion to nine members, with one per congressional district and one at large.
Senator-Elect Frank Ellis of St Tammany parish is virtually assured as president pro tempo re of the Louisiana senate after four rival candidates withdrew. Governor-Elect Sem H. Jones approved the settlement, praising the cooperative move. Bauer remains Bauer opposed by Arthur C. Watson for speaker as the legislature nears convening May 13.
British reports say Allied forces crossed the North Sea to land on the Norwegian coast without losses. Comms say submarines torpedoed two German troopships, three German planes were shot down, and at least four German aircraft were destroyed in air battles on the western front. Allied forces in Norway occupy key positions.
Monroe unveils five new buses to replace old DeSiard and Riverside routes at about 5000 dollars each. The vehicles seating 27 merge with the existing fleet and will run on current schedules with old buses kept for substitutions and special runs.
Benito Mussolini sent Adolf Hitler a birthday message expressing confidence that Germany would victoriously survive the test it faces. Hitler replied with hearty thanks and belief that both nations would win their vital rights. King Christian of Denmark, under German occupation, also sent greetings.
The Louisiana State High School Band Festival concluded in Alexandria with bands from over 530 schools performing on the Boston High School field. First place ratings were announced for solo and ensemble categories including alto saxophone Frank Schneider and Alice Fortier, tenor sax Clyde Stent, clarinets Peter Gallardo and H N ichues, among others.
President William Green of the American Federation of Labor told the Southwest Labor conference he is unalterably opposed to any move that might involve the United States in the European war. He condemned communism and praised AFL as hated by enemies, citing European reports of Nazi advances aided by Norway. He questioned traitors at home and criticized critics of U S policy as imperialistic.
Rescue workers comb the wreckage of the Lake Shore Limited near Little Falls New York after a derailment. The crash killed and injured many passengers as investigators note the train traveled faster than allowed around a sharp curve. Officials say road bed was in first class condition and many bodies remain unidentified.
Chamber of Commerce figures report March gains in Monroe across pental receipts motor vehicle registrations freight shipments and power and bank metrics. George D. Holland notes overall March activity about ten percent higher than March 1989 with employment and manufacturing also up though some sectors vary.
Louisiana Parent Teacher Association adjourned after accepting Baton Rouge as the site for the 1941 convention. Mrs Sam H Jones and the governor elect welcome the meeting while John E Coxe pledged support for a recreational program. WPA recreation director John E Zimmerman reported 26 000 people in 65 cities participated in leisure time activities.
