U S agents report the Hamm kidnapping case solved with the arrest of three men. Details identify charges and the role of each suspect in the abduction. Authorities confirm ongoing investigations and surveillance leading to arrests.
The Ethiopian capital and palace endured machine gun fire and rockets as Mussolini pressed to smash the empire. The blast of color and fear overshadowed calls for a decisive battle, while historical references to past conquests contrast with looming modern warfare. The partly clothed corpse of a woman, about 5 feet tall with bleached blonde hair, was found under a tree in a Queens residential area. Police and Medical Examiner Howard Neal said she was badly beaten, possibly with a blunt instrument, and that skull fractures and evidence of being carried to the spot were present.
Brack Benge 26 of London Kentucky pleaded guilty before a U S commissioner to possession of counterfeit coins. Lester Richardson 27 of Tyler Texas pleaded innocent. Fred Johnson 23 was freed after Benge said Johnson was not involved. Officials seized bogus half-dollar pieces and a chalk mould. Benge and Richardson were jailed.

Georgetown Texas April 18. A University of Texas student, Guy Bryant 20, died after a plane crash near Georgetown while en route from an air carnival for the centennial celebration. Jeff Farris 21 was critically injured. both were taken to Martin's hospital.
President Roosevelt signed a bill authorizing the Reconstruction corporation to lend up to 50 million dollars for rehabilitation in flood and storm stricken areas. Loans would be available to individuals organizations municipalities and political subdivisions of states.
The executive council of the Louisiana Teachers Association adopted resolutions calling for repeal of the teachers act and its replacement with a tenure law after three years probation. They also urged more education funding and named delegates to the National Education Association convention in Portland.
The Intransigeant said Britain, France and Belgian generals agreed Belgium would defend a line from Antwerp to Ghent with two forts and flood capability. British air use of Belgian fields was noted and a rapid expansion of air bases planned. A defense link to France's Maginot line was considered.
Mayor William N. McNair spent more than an hour in jail after refusing to sign a warrant to repay a $190 fine tied to a lottery case. Judge Thomas Marshall freed him on his own recognizance with a Monday hearing set, while charges include nonfeasance and a historic 1860 embezzlement statute.
Sheriff deputies and West Monroe police worked in the dark Friday night as to who battered Jesse M. Hughes an employee of the Union Oil Mill. Hughes found unconscious in front of the mill about 11 pm suffered a severely cut face and bruises to the arms legs and shoulders then taken to the Vaughan clinic in Monroe where he regained consciousness about 3 pm Saturday. He could not remember the events with the sixth page continuation referenced.

Knox Borah and Landon claim gains while Farley touts a sweeping victory trend. he cites California and Pittsburgh registration as proof of strong Democratic backing and criticizes opposition repeal aims.
Martin Schlossman was arrested in New York on charges of abducting Paul H. Wendel and forcing a Lindbergh kidnapping confession. Wendel identified Schlossman as one of four men who held him in a Brooklyn house. police also questioned Murray Bleefeld, Harry Weiss, and others as the investigation widens.
Louis McHenry Howe longtime Roosevelt adviser and secretary to the president died in his sleep at the naval hospital after more than a year of illness. Heart and chest complications were given as the cause. President Roosevelt learned of the death upon his return to the White House from the Gridiron dinner. Mrs. Howe in Fall River Mass was notified by telephone. Funeral arrangements were not yet set as of midnight.
The Ways and Means tax sub-committee approved the new tax bill but lacks full yield estimates. A windfall tax rate was lowered from 90 to 85 percent. Administration leaders aim for early passage to reach adjournment. Speaker Burns schedules general debate as week-long arguments begin. Chairman Hill said the panel finished and will move the bill to the full committee Tuesday.
Two quarrelling Townsend movement leaders Frank Arbuckle and George Highley announced a truce after conference in Los Angeles. Arbuckle described an amicable adjustment of all differences as Townsendism must march on.
J Q Burgess Jr aged 26 shot himself at his uncle state representative J Porter Burgess's home at 1210 Park Avenue. Coroner Dr C L Mengis said Burgess died instantly from a 32 20 caliber revolver. family heard a chair overturn before the tragedy. Burgess had just arrived from Washington state and planned to start work with the Louisiana highway commission. Funeral arrangements were to be announced.
A 11 year old Negro delivery boy Joe Lamb was killed when a white bandit attempted a grocery store robbery at 208 South Eighth Street New Town. Aubrey Bruner owner fired at the bandit as he fled. police and witnesses described the incident with Bruner and clerk Jesse Filhiol pursuing. The bandit was seen fleeing southward, possibly wounded in the shoulder.
Mayors Arnold Bernstein of Monroe and C. C. Bell of West Monroe proclaim April 20 to 25 as Clean-up Week. The Ouachita parish health unit backs the drive with 5 000 circulars in Monroe and 2 000 in West Monroe urging resident participation to rid the area of trash and disease breeding filth.
The U S department declares the Hamm kidnapping solved with three alleged conspirators arrested. Alvin T. Karpis remains at large while connections to the Bremer and Barker circles are named. Arrests include John P. Pfeiffer in Minneapolis and Charles J. Fitzgerald in Los Angeles.
Washington April 18 The Senate commerce committee voted 19 to reconsider its decision to have the government pay all land and damage costs in the omnibus flood control bill. The action leaves undecided the policy on handling about 100 million dollars of costs. the bill neared 370 million with three new projects added: St Francis river Arkansas Missouri 16 million Yazoo river Mississippi 48 million and Big Black river Mississippi 0.85 million.
Robert L. Pettit resigns as East Baton Rouge parish sheriff to serve as acting postmaster in Baton Rouge. Pettit lost reelection in January as an anti administrationist. resignation accepted by Governor James A. Noe. His successor not named. H. DeBretton, who defeated Pettit, will take office in May.
