Governor Earl K Long urged support for four proposed constitutional amendments in the Louisiana general election. He announced state holidays to allow workers to vote and criticized Sam H Jones for opposing Amendment No 1 which would repeal the state sales tax.
The council rejected repealing the sales tax without safeguards for those dependent on it. Mr. Mitchell urged that a funding plan for the needy be arranged before repeal. Reportedly A B Clarkson, president of the Chest, polled a majority against repeal by amendment.
British forces push into Narvik fjord as Battleship Warspite and destroyers clash with German units. Admiralty reports seven German destroyers sunk or damaged while UK losses include two destroyers. Overnight action follows earlier rescue missions by Cossack and continued efforts to loosen Nazi control on Norway’s coast.
Farmers report substantial losses from a cold spell. Louisiana State University expert Dr. J C Miller estimates strawberry production halved to about 1800 cars from 3000. North Mississippi stores report damaged sweet potatoes while Hazlehurst tomatoes show two thirds killed. Cabbages peas beans and cotton sprouting in north Louisiana also damaged.
