Monroe Police Probe Burglary on South Grand

Police investigate a burglary at the Alcoholics Anonymous building 4300 S Grand St. A cigarette machine and a soft drink machine were broken into with money and items stolen. Groceries such as coffee cream and sugar were taken. Entry was via a broken screen and window. Reported 11 32 a m Saturday by the janitor. Louis C Messer 32 West Monroe charged with driving while intoxicated after arrest on Cypress Street at 410 pm.

300 Attend State Dance Symposium

Around 300 dancers attended the Louisiana State Dance Symposium at Northeast Louisiana State College. Miss Ida Chadwick said attendance exceeded expectations. Four states were represented, including Louisiana colleges Mississippi State College for Women Arkansas A&M and Auburn University. High schools and dance studios also participated.

4-H Achievement Day Draws 700 plus at Crosley Elementary

More than 700 participants from Ouachita Parish attended the 4-H Achievement Day at Crosley Elementary School in West Monroe. Calhoun High School 4-H Club won the song contest and Calhoun Junior High Club the yell contest, earning a free trip to the state fair in Shreveport next fall.

East Carroll Farm Bureau Crowns Queen

About 250 people attended the East Carroll Farm Bureau Family Night at Lake Providence Country Club where Toni Manning was crowned Miss East Carroll Farm Bureau Queen. Manning, the Lake Providence High School senior, won over eight contestants and was crowned by last year’s queen Carolyn Ann Oswalt. First runner ups included Leona Ainsworth June Marchbanks and Faye White. Peggy Madden won the talent prize defeating 13 competitors singing Old Man River and That Man of Mine. Judges were Propst Fair Mary Joe Webb and Tony Acosta.

The NAACP announced mass demonstrations at General Motors plants nationwide to protest alleged discriminatory employment practices. National labor secretary Herbert Hill said dates will be announced shortly. GM denied discrimination citing 45,000 nonwhite workers and average wages above 6,000 dollars nationally.
