CAP Holds First Regular Meeting of Monroe Squadron

The Monroe Civil Air Patrol squadron met at Selman Field with Captain P. C. Pipes calling for high school boys aged 15 to 18 to join. The unit offers link training, meteorology, navigation and flight theory classes at no cost, with ground school and future uniforms planned. Regular army drill will be included but membership does not make youths servicemen.

Notable Jaycee Leader to Speak at Louisiana Convention

George O. Baird Jr vice president of the United States Chamber of Commerce will be a featured speaker at the Louisiana Junior Chamber state convention set for April 23 25. A New York Life agent and Shreveport native active in Jaycee work since 1941 he has led in Texas and Louisiana, serving as state officer and president, with duties on leadership training plans for delegates.

Air Cadet Prospectus For Monroe Squadron At Selman Field

An outing is planned for members of the local air cadet squadron with time and place to be announced. Last night’s meeting was attended by senior members and 12 staff officers of the focal group. Meetings are Fridays at 8 p m at Selman Field. Interested boys may contact Capt Pines or Lt R L George at telephone 2359 for information. Boiled smoked tongue cooling in its cooking liquid for at least an hour before peeling is advised.

Airplane Uses Go From Skywriting to Fish Stocking

The Civil Aeronautics Administration reports private pilots perform 57 occupations. Sky writing involves 34 operators with 50 planes. rainmaking 73 operators. Fish spotting uses 40 aircraft, stock enhancement 47, powerline patrol 152, pipeline 50, oil well service 223. Farm work includes spraying 2000 plus, soil conservation 100, pollination 90, livestock herding 45, frost prevention 25, fertilizer 51, weed control 20, plus one pilot claimed fruit knocking. 428 aircraft hunted missing persons. 500 plus pilots hunted western game. 29 blimps advertise neon. 39 aircraft with loudspeakers hawk products. 99 pilots fly two signs.

Dick Richmond Cast in Leading Role in The Front Page

Dick Richmond is cast as Hildey Johnson in the Mon roe Little Theatre's May production of The Front Page directed by Kay Crandall Causey. The fast moving comedy features a newsroom crew including Gilbert Findlay David Nicol Luke Morris Sue Williams and Frank Patterson with Theo M Clain James Gilmer Bid Causey and others in key roles.

Arcadia High School to Exhibit Books This Week

Arcadia La April 10 Special Arcadia High School library hosts a book exhibit April 12 to 16 featuring volumes from major publishers on Louisiana requisition lists. Librarian Mrs Lucille A Daughdril says superintendents principals and librarians from nearby parishes are invited to view and select titles for next year. Out of town guests may attend any day except Wednesday April 14 when a local silver tea will be held for community members and parents.

Crime prevention urged as cheaper aim over punishment

Edwin J. Lukas of the Society for the Prevention of Crime argues early childhood intervention and public guidance clinics can prevent crime more effectively than jail or capital punishment. He cites costs of prosecutions and electrocution versus preventive programs and urges parental training and youth services.

Benefit Minstrel Show At Winnsboro Set For April 15

Winnsboro Lions Club sponsors the eleventh Lazy Moon Minstrel to raise funds for eye treatments for parish children. Hiram Waller leads production with L. L. Miller as interlocutor. The cast features H. B. Waller Sweetcake Yelvie Cuney Bones Willie D. Loftin Mose Ed Lee Jr. Honey Boy Davis Slim and others, plus a male quartet and a girls trio. A 4:30 pre show parade precedes an 8 p.m. curtain at the high school auditorium.
