An Algerian terrorist shot a taxi driver in Boulogne and an off-duty policeman in Paris as raids against extremists intensify. The violence coincides with planned Evian peace talks between French authorities and Algerian rebels, worsened by ongoing unrest in Paris and Algiers.
New Orleans rackets kingpin Carlos Marcello says he did not obtain Guatemala citizenship papers to flee deportation, calling his removal a kidnapping. Circuit Judge John Greene Jr. set April 24 for the second murder trial of Jon Mattox 21 a former college student sentenced to life for strangling neighbor Mrs Gene Tate 31 Columbus socialite and mother of four The trial follows the Mississippi Supreme Court reversal of his May 4 1960 conviction and his confinement in Meridian jail The state's key witness Sarah Grayson 49 testified Mattox claimed an affair with a married woman and said he planned to kill her because she loved her husband and children more than him.
A spectacular blaze struck Vexasphaltic Co on Abundance Street in New Orleans causing an estimated 25 000 to 50 000 in damage. Fire Chief Edward J O Brien said the fire was under control about 45 minutes after it started with no injuries. Albert J Hane 35 an employee said he was filling 43 gallon drums when the fire began.
Leland Humphreys of Winnsboro has been readmitted to St Francis Hospital after an operation a few days earlier. He was discharged home last Saturday but returned for further examination and is listed in room 350. He previously worked in sales in Burlington, Vermont.
PFC W C Bryant son of Archie C Bryant Route 2 Eros joined 1000 U S Infantrymen in Korea as part of the Seventh Infantry Division. Bryant and other Second Division members at Fort Benning Ga became part of the Seventh Division’s Second Battle Group on arrival in Korea. He entered the Army in April 1960.
In California, Robert D. Thayer and his family were hospitalized after he tested gold flecks found on his property. He released mercury vapor through the house by evaporating mercury to separate fool's gold, contaminating walls and furnishings. Decontamination may cost about $4,000 plus repainting and possible furniture destruction.
Three northeastern Louisiana towns Bastrop Farmerville and Collinston hold municipal elections with 86 candidates for mayor council and alderman positions Polls open 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Incumbents A P Carter Troy Nolan and A W Harper face challengers while numerous names appear for council and alderman seats across the three locales.
James Morris Allen, a St. Joseph school bus driver and farmer, was killed by a .22 slug while shooting at birds in his yard. Coroner ruled death accidental. He lived eight miles south of St. Joseph and leaves a widow, a son, a daughter, and other relatives. Funeral services were to be held at St. Joseph Baptist Church with interment in Legion Memorial Cemetery.
The Salvation Army building fund drive remains about $10,000 short of its $115,000 goal though construction plans move forward. Architects Roy Johns and Jobn I. Neel have been hired, with work to start by mid June and the building ready for use by November. Total to date is $105,755 with divisions: advance memorial gifts 65,819 special gifts 7,275 general gifts 5,379 and women's gifts 27,101. guest speaker Capt. Sidney Lynch of New Orleans outlined global concerns before the local group.
A citizens group in New Orleans launched a drive for 300000 to build a private school for students from the city’s two integrated schools. The Ninth Ward Private School Association heads the effort from downtown, with plans to operate on the state grant-in-aid program.
