Fierce weather at Otis Air Force Base Massachusetts caused three F-4C Starfire jets to crash during landing. One pilot Ist Lt Frederick J Luddy 25 of Altoona PA perished with the third jet hitting his stalled craft. Three other crew escaped injury as tower communications failed and visibility collapsed.

Helicopter Crashes During Mountain Rescue Operation
In San Bernardino California a helicopter carrying airmen from a crashed Air Force C 82 cargo plane went down near Lake Arrowhead during a rescue. Ground crews were en route with no casualty details. The C 82 crash Tuesday killed the pilot and left eight survivors, some found hours later with minor injuries. Major John Autry of Norton AFB reported today.

Averell Harriman, 62, former Republican and Roosevelt-Truman official, captured the Democratic nomination on the first ballot at a fiery New York state convention defeating Rep. Franklin D. Mrs. Schuetz 78 of Route 3 died at 2 10 am today at St. Clare hospital after a year of ill health. Survived by six sons including John Jr Carl Fred Walter Edward Werner a daughter Mrs Harry Bloom 19 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Funeral Friday at 2 pm Shriner Neushwander funeral home officiated by Rev Paul C Kehle with burial in Greenwood cemetery.
