Cheese Days Feasts Highlight Wausau Drum Corps Weekend

The Wausau Story Drum and Bugle Corps plus the Blue Knights of St Paul relied on Monroe High School meals for Saturday night and Sunday noon during Cheese Days. Gerald Fehl received a birthday cake during the gala and the affair honored his birthday anniversary. Police report thefts include beer from Hatties Bar and Grill and a yellow 1968 Plymouth taken from 719 20th Ave. A stereo player was stolen from 1317 17th St and no items were reported missing at 2633 8th Ave.

Prices rise five tenths in August inflation stays around six percent

Consumer prices increased five tenths of a percent in August marking the third straight monthly gain. Food fuel and clothing costs rose while meat slipped, pushing the annual inflation rate toward six percent as unemployment climbed to 7.9 percent and pay fell in real terms.

Moonlight Madness Lights Up Monroe Stores on Sept 29

Monroe Chamber of Commerce sponsors Moonlight Madness with 7 to 10 p.m. shopping at participating stores. A sales employee contest will have judges evaluate male and female staff in nightwear costumes. Winners receive gift certificates. Mayor Clifford Reasa and others will judge. Stores may join by calling chamber by Sept 27 noon.

Suit asks USDA to pay farmers for corn losses

Madison AP A suit filed in U S District Court seeks 633110 dollars from the Department of Agriculture for corn missing from the Evansville grain exchange. Dean George trustee says USDA knew of shortages as early as 1972 and refused to inform farmers. The firm was declared bankrupt in 1975 with owner Benjamin Green later found guilty of fraud.

United Fund drive opens today in Monroe

The Monroe United Fund campaign begins with a goal of 40975 to aid 17 agencies. Dr. Pete Mueller chairs the drive with training sessions completed and an early September gift letter campaign yielding gratifying results. Divisional goals and agency allocations are listed, including large gifts to American Red Cross and Boy Scouts. The operating budget remains about 2700 and plaques will honor 1975 giving standards.
