A First Edition proof set of 24 American Legion medals honoring battles was presented to Zilmer-Riley American Legion Post 84 by former member Lawrence H. Courtney now of Janesville. Post commander Herbert Booth accepted on behalf of Dr. T. W. Reilly. Courtney, a Bataan Death March survivor, wrote a letter accompanying the gift urging preservation of American history and patriotism. The post also passed a May 30 Memorial Day date change resolution and endorsed candidates Nelson Miller and Bud Mautz for district and state command roles. Post membership reached 109, with Veterans Day events planned and a Green County Legion picnic scheduled.
The Senate confirmed Henry A. Kissinger as secretary of state and kept his role as national security adviser. The Foreign Relations Committee approved 16 to 1, saying the dual duties could work and should be reexamined if needed. McGovern opposed as protest against Indochina war. Four crossing guards are added to Monroe Public Schools. The guards are Mrs Harold Neuenschwander, Mrs Ted Scheffer, Mrs Floyd Ostrander and Mrs Howard Bressath, stationed at four street corners and avenues. Parents should teach children to cross only at these crossings and drivers should watch closely during peak school hours from 7 to 7 30 am 8 to 830 am 1145 am to 1245 pm 3 to 330 pm and 430 to 5 pm.
Washington reports consumer prices rose 1.8 percent in August, the fastest gain in 26 years, with food costs driving the surge. Meat poultry and eggs led the rise, pushing grocery prices up about 7.5 percent, the highest since 1946 for adjusted data.
