Low bids opened for a senior high school addition total 365 028 dollars including air conditioning for the assembly hall. General construction bids show a 10 000 dollar spread among four firms. No contracts awarded yet. board to reconvene Sept 27 to review architects report and award contracts if funding allows.
The United Telephone Co. seeks authority to raise rates across eight exchanges. A resumed hearing is set for 10 a.m. October 9 in Room 686, State Office Building in Madison after an August 16 session and a September 11 transcription notice to interested parties. Participants include Monroe attorney Glen H. Bell and officials from Mon roe Juda Hollendale Blanchardville Albany and related city attorneys and presidents. A PSC hearing on service adequacy remains unscheduled.
James Schwoegler of the Green County SCS reported that hillside corn has largely escaped the first autumn frost while lowlands suffered more. Most fields are dented or ripe enough to resist damage and harvest may begin after warmer, drier weather returns. The county saw a first sub freezing reading of 30 degrees.
Washington reports the House approved a compromise farm bill by 202-197 and sent it to the Senate for action next week. The measure, opposed by most Republicans and 37 Democrats, gives 1963 payments to wheat and feed grain growers who reduce acreage, plus 1964 and later provisions allowing corn price supports between 50 and 90 percent of parity to avoid enlarging surplus stocks.
The United Nations announced one Swede was killed five injured and four unharmed when a Dakota plane crashed in North Katanga on Thursday. Republicans led the opposition citing a $600 million eight year loans plan and a 20 percent college grants provision for needy students. Southern Democrats backed the motion to return the bill.

The Green County Conservation League reports releasing about 4,350 pheasants and plans to stock mature cock birds on 21 000 acres of public hunting grounds. The Justice Department asked a federal panel to cite 13 members of the State College Board for contempt for failing to enroll James H. Meredith at the University of Mississippi. A hearing was set for Monday in New Orleans. Barnett, acting as registrar, rejected Meredith after federal courts had ordered enrollment. Meredith's plans remained unclear as the legal fight resumed.
Two Brooklyn couples were treated at St. Clare hospital after a head on collision on Gill road in Brooklyn Township. Injured were Harman J. Ellis and Elizabeth Ellis and Orville Fry and his wife. Ellis, 76, former Brookly n village president, suffered knee and forehead lacerations with a good prognosis. Elizabeth Ellis, 66, had forehead and knee lacerations and a fractured left ankle in fair to good condition. Fry, 51, had multiple fractures and lacerations with a fair condition. his wife suffered a fractured jaw and lacerations with loss of teeth. Sheriff deputies report the crash occurred 1 1/2 miles south of Highway 92 at 7:55 p.m.
In Green Bay Wisconsin the Wisconsin Cheese Exchange shows higher bids and sales across multiple cheddar styles. State brand barrel cheese 32 percent price up a quarter cent per pound, 60‑lb blocks 33 percent up a half cent, pasteurized longhorns 36 percent up a quarter cent, and other cheddars at 33 percent with small increases.
A storm swamped Sarasota with more than 13 inches of rain on Thursday. Flood waters up to three feet forced evacuations while gusts up to 40 mph felled trees and cut power and water services in parts of the area.
