Wiley urges plan for Western Europe defense unity

Anton M. Miller Dies Farm Leader and Former Lawmaker

Anton M. Miller, 72, prominent farmer and former Wisconsin lawmaker, died Sunday after a heart attack. Born on a Kaukauna Route 1 farm, he served in the Assembly from 1921 to 1929 and in the Senate from 1929 to 1933 as a Progressive, later serving six years on the University of Wisconsin Board of Regents. Funeral services are set for Tuesday afternoon.

Mendes-France Proposes New Pact to Unite Europe

Prime Minister Pierre Mendes-France urged the Council of Europe to back a revised West European defense pact. He said it could curtail French opposition to West Germany joining NATO and would resemble a strengthened Brussels pact with supranational elements. He stressed France must lead Europe with Britain and Germany.

Texas barbecue poisoning sickens 500 at fire dept picnic

NEW ULM Texas 500 persons fell ill from food poisoning after eating barbecue and potato salad at a volunteer fire department picnic. Dr C I Shult of Columbus said bacteria in the advance prepared potato salad likely caused it. At least 42 remained hospitalized in five towns. no deaths reported. Five doctors rushed to treat victims. many ill were housed in private homes as hospitals filled.

Farm Marketing Receipts Drop in Wisconsin Six Months 1954

Wisconsin farm marketings in January to June 1954 totaled 508.4 million dollars, down 24.0 million from the previous year. Livestock and livestock products fell 20.31 million, crops 3.69 million, hog marketings reached 128.912 million, and cattle and calves 120.662 million. Milk production in August 1954 was 10 million pounds below August 1953, with July at 1.554 billion pounds and August totals at 1.321 billion pounds.

2000 Attend Farm Field Day at New Glarus

Nearly two thousand farmers and families gathered behind the J. Ivan Eimer farm in New Glarus for a farm field day and plowing contest.
