Stauffacher and Faubel Triumph in Green County Primaries

Louis B. Stauffacher and Miss Lois E. Faubel won Green County primary contests. Stauffacher defeated Charles B. Bolender for treasurer in 2 033 to 1 1, Miss Faubel beat Marvin T. Holcomb 1 942 to 1 606. Other county races produced nominations for Melvin Olson, Walter Gould, and incumbents with strong showings.

Kohler Wins Green County Republican Primary Results

Green county voters favored Walter J. Kohler by 725 votes over Leonard F. Schmitt in the GOP primary. Kohler totaled 2 057 to 1 332 for Schmitt with Kohler carrying 21 of 28 Green county precincts and all Monroe precincts. City totals showed Kohler leading 1 056 to 530. Other GOP leads included Zimmerman 2 935 and Wiley 2 480 in county races.

Brooklyn township was first to report to the county clerk at 7 p.m. Exeter was last, reporting at 10:20 p.m. The final tabulation reached the election headquarters at the secretary of state's office about 10:50 p.m. with all 28 precincts accounted for.

Kohler Defeats Len Schmitt in Wisconsin Governor Race

In Wisconsin, Walter J. Kohler won the Republican nomination for governor over Len J. Schmitt by a tighter margin than expected as results from 3,044 precincts favored Kohler 256,988 to 139,176. Carl W. Thompson led the Democratic gubernatorial race with 125,050 votes to Charles Greene's 36,374.

Monticello Marine Receives Call to Active Duty

Dean Zimmerman 22 a marine reservist with the Second Marines has received his call to active duty. He enlisted Sept 25 1946 and was separated Sept 17 1948. He will undergo a physical in Milwaukee Oct 5 and be sent to Camp Lejeune NC. He is son of Mr and Mrs Marvin Zimmerman a Monticello high school graduate who worked with his father in plumbing.

Surprise turnout in Green County primary exceeds 1948 vote

Green county voters flocked to the polls in yesterday s primary, eclipsing the presidential preference turnout of 1948 and nearing 1946 governor race levels. A total of 3 824 ballots were cast for governor, with 3 389 Republican and 434 Democratic ballots, and Monroe s registered voters at 49.9 percent participation. City totals reached 11 867, up from 1 360 in 1948, with ward results showing strongest turnout in the Second Ward at 56.7 percent and varying rates across Wards 1 3 and 4.

Meteor Explosion In Tennessee Jars Two-State District

A meteor flashed west of Nashville today and apparently exploded in the air, rattling areas from Paducah Kentucky to Memphis Tennessee. IC dispatchers in Paducah reported a ball of fire growing larger before the explosion, seen by a signal man in Covington Tennessee. Memphis officials and state patrols dispatched cars northward. a report placed the blast near Hatchie Bottoms between Memphis and Millington, though not confirmed.

Smith and Harvey Compete in Wisconsin District Race

U S Representative Lawrence H Smith seeks a fifth term in the First district with 35 566 votes across Green Walworth Racine Kenosha and Rock counties far above his 1948 primary. Opponent Racine L. Harvey polled 15 435 in Democratic race with Green county showing 306 votes for him. Smith defeated Harvey in 1948 67 387 to 61 791.

Telephone stock shakes market as AT and T falls

A sharp drop in American Telephone capital stock rattled the market as AT and T slid about 3 dollars to 149 before recovering.
