President Nixon urges Congress to authorize cash housing subsidies replacing large public housing. He cites a 15 to 40 percent higher cost to the government when providing housing and outlines direct payments to qualified recipients to choose homes on the private market. He prioritizes the elderly poor and early 1975 decision timing.
Agriculture Secretary Earl L. Butz says Congress blocks spending beyond 25 million for extra milk in schools while the Nixon administration sought cuts. Sen. William Proxmire accuses him of ignoring the law as the Senate backs 97 million and a conference committee seeks compromise. Butz insists no authority to exceed 25 million though 1970 rules called for 97 million. Conditions have changed since 1969, he adds.
The vice president rejects claims he will resign while his office backs efforts to clear him of Maryland political corruption charges. Republicans Goldwater and Morton deny they spoke of Agnew quitting.
Patricio Aylwin of Chile's Christian Democratic party claims President Allende planned a fake leftist coup to seize absolute power. He says the emergency would justify a dictatorship and the left would crush the opposition.
State Senator Gordon W. Roseleip announces public hearings on hunting and fishing license increases in Lancaster at Grant County Courthouse on Tuesday and Dodgeville at Iowa County Courthouse on Wednesday both begin at 7 pm. The sessions will also cover snowmobile trail funding and boating rules with DNR rule power debated.
The Monroe City Council unanimously annexed 42.4 acres in Clarno Township behind the Advance Transformer plant into the city with temporary R-2 zoning for multifamily housing in Ward 5. The council also hired Green Engineering Co. as consulting engineer, approved equipment purchases for the sewage plant, and set terms for storm sewer and road work contracts, plus licenses and personnel actions.
Circuit Judge Gordon Muse fined the Kenosha Education Assn 7500 dollars per day for each day it refused to return to work. KEA officers faced 10 dollars per day. Palmyra and Beloit districts also saw ongoing walkouts with classes disrupted and mediation planned in Watertown.
OSHKOSH Winnebago County Board voted 28 to 16 to retain 46 members, preserving the largest county governing body in the state. The measure defeated a plan to cut the board to 23 members.
Three Monroe High School students Katherine M. Brennan Caroline K Frantz and Peggy L Haas and one Brodhead High School student Glenn D Staffield are among 15 000 semifinalists in the 1974 National Merit Scholarship program. They ranked high on the October PSAT and will compete for about 3100 Merit Scholarships next spring.
Monroe Armory hosts National Hunting and Fishing Day sponsored by the Monroe Trap Club and Green County Hunter Safety Instructors. The event features films, displays from local stores, and registration for hunter safety courses with age rules for youth.
