Julian Ritter says he will write a book about his seven week drift with a man and a girl after their 45 foot sailboat the Galilee was found starved by the Navy ship Niagara 422 miles northwest of Honolulu. The boat will be sold and a Coast Guard cutter was due to tow it to Pearl Harbor.
Washington AP Senate votes 77 to 1 to approve an exemption ridden regulation of one-bank holding companies despite Sen. William Proxmire’s lone opposition. He denounces the measure as a mockery and a major step backward amid intense lobbying for special interests.
Six top winners were chosen in the Monroe Cheese Days contest and will receive trophies at a Saturday night ceremony on the stage. Judges include Glenn Erbe Horeb and William Schinslag of Madison. Trophies to be presented by James Ula and Roy Kundert. Cheeses will be displayed in a refrigerated case on the Square during the two day festival.
Rosa Schumacher born 1875 in Bern Switzerland observed her 95th birthday today. She lives with son Clarence Schumacher in Janesville after moving from Monroe three and a half years ago. She has seven sons, 23 grandchildren, 72 great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild.
The Cheese Day committee showcases a large Swiss bell donated by Switzerland and antique cheese making items including a butter churn. Donors include Mrs. Celeste Disch of Breezy Acres Antiques and John Steinman of Monroe. The program details parade routes, store hours, and museum highlights across the Green County Cheese Days event.
Palestinian guerrillas and Jordanian troops battled across central Jordan with Amman under curfew imposed by the new military regime led by Field Marshal Habis Majali. The U S Embassy was fired upon but no injuries were reported as fighting raged through the morning.

A Wisconsin Assembly State Affairs Committee proposed 13 measures to curb campus disorder at the University of Wisconsin Madison. The plan calls for tighter security, a tougher president, enrollment limits, stricter admissions screening, public-use curbs on campus facilities, and dismissal of noncompliant staff. Rep. Jerry Wing urged bills for 1971 and criticized Board of Regents reception. One vote against came from Rep. Richard Pabst.
President Nixon spoke at Kansas State University amid cheers from a 15 000 strong crowd and some heckling. He urged officials and students to uphold order, tolerance, and the rule of law at home and abroad, condemning violence.
