Seven Rural Schools Sold at Auction for 6145.25

Seven closed rural school buildings plus land were sold to highest bidders by the Board of Education in a special meeting. Proceeds totaled 6145.25 with top bid of 2005 from Clifford Leuzinger for Michael school in Cadiz Township. Other bidders included John Holtshopple 1560 for Greenbush in Sylvester, Green County Historical Society 877.75 for Franklin in Clarno, Frank Guttmer 225 for Watson in Cadiz, Alvin Bidlingmaier 177.50 for Green Valley in Cadiz, Marlene Schumacher 850 for Grove in Cadiz, and Melvin Updike 450 for Dry Good Box and land in Washington Township. The historical society plans to store Franklin building collections there.

Guard Reserve Mental Standards Increased

The Army orders higher mental requirements for new Reserve and National Guard recruits aligning with active Army qualifications. Planning has run about two years. Implementation starts Oct. 1 for Reserve and about a month later for the Guard. Existing personnel remain unaffected.

The Monroe Clinic installed an automatic X-ray unit from Eastman Kodak that yields usable negatives in seven minutes, cutting processing time from about an hour. Welcome Signs Promised for Monroe by Chamber

Aldermen Approve $600 For Runway Job At Monroe Airport

City Council authorized the State Aeronautics Commission to begin a 2000 foot secondary runway east of Monroe and transferred 600 to the airport fund. The federal government allowed bids on a 2700 foot main runway to start this winter with use by next summer.

Radio Unit Damaged by Hail Hits Monroe County

A Monroe County storm knocked WEKZ off air at 8 a.m. when lightning damaged a transmitter and service was not restored by 1:30 p.m. An engineer from Madison was to repair the unit. The storm also brought hail six miles north of Monroe, with hailstones from moth balls to quarters. A rainbow appeared after 6 a.m. as dark clouds and rain moved in.
