Candidates for major state offices told the League of Women Voters of Wisconsin today how they stand on taxation segregation schools and other major issues. The league submitted questionnaires on state problems to all candidates and most replies echoed the candidates prior positions.
A luncheon featuring Gov. Oscar Rennebohm will be open to men and women this Saturday. Hosted by the Republican Women's club of Green county, the event takes place at the Eugene hotel with lunch at 1 p.m. Reservations are handled by Mrs. Ralph H. Wenger. Planning leadership includes Mrs. Stewart F. Kingston and Mrs. Erma Thurber.
Democratic hopefuls Carroll and Thompson argue for higher corporate and income taxes and oppose sales taxes. Republican contenders Immell and Rennebohm advocate a tax system based on ability to pay with new levies, while Thompson criticizes Wisconsin conservation policy influence.
Herbert L. Bell, a 16 year old Twin Grove youth, was diagnosed with rheumatic fever and not polio as first suspected. Discharged from St. Clare hospital, he will convalesce at home with his parents, the Herbert Bolls. Leg stiffness noted at admission did not progress to paralysis, and no heart involvement has appeared. Green county reports no known polio cases.
A cool gray autumn day breaks the summer heat in Monroe and across Wisconsin though official seasonal change remains two weeks away. Light rain drizzled statewide with Monroe reporting .70 inch by noon as low temperatures lingered around 53 and highs near 55 degrees.
The board authorized a contract with Monroe Transit to transport high school teams and groups on trips if a suitable bus is available. President Herbert T. Johnson to negotiate the contract. The sale of the present bus also approved due to storage issues. Superintendent E. O. Evans to negotiate daily transport between South and North schools. South grade two has 43 students. North grade two has 21.
Police reported an attempted burglary at Kundert Brothers Hardware, 1019 16th Avenue, over the holiday weekend. The intruder fled after being frightened, leaving a back door damaged. a 12 gauge shotgun was found on a counter near the front.
Henry Wallace is listed on the ballot in 15 states as the Progressive Party reports. Even if he carried all, he would still lack the necessary electoral votes for the presidency.
Mrs. Charles Bauer of Milton died at 10 05 last night at St Clarental after being admitted as a medical patient at 2 yesterday afternoon. Nelson funeral home of Janesville is in charge.
Harold E. Stassen told a Detroit rally that President Truman is a complainer and cannot provide essential leadership for the years ahead. He accused Truman of appealing to labor with extreme demagoguery and said Truman followed Wallace’s economic theories.
Thomas E. Dewey will open his presidential campaign September 20 with a speech at Drake Stadium in Des Moines from 8 to 8:30 p.m. est. Herbert Brownell Jr. announced the event, which will be broadcast on CBS and Mutual. Dewey will visit Iowa two days after Truman speaks at a farm outing near Dexter.
Former Minnesota governor Harold Stassen assailed President Truman over inflation and policy, arguing Truman’s leadership fueled unemployment and fear. He defended Dewey’s stance, touted Taft Hartley gains, and predicted a Republican victory in November as New York would go GOP.
Public school enrollment on the second day of the 1948 49 term stands at 1 203, down slightly from last year’s 1 210 mid term total. Lin coln leads with 165 pupils, while senior and junior highs show declines.
An ongoing fire hazard survey in Monroe’s business district by the Wisconsin Industrial Commission’s safety and sanitation division continues into its third day. John M. McHale Jr. of the fire prevention branch leads the inspection ordered after the Fitzgibbons building fire on August 28. Union participation and owner efforts to remove hazards are noted, with expected completion soon.
Robert Jacob, 21, of Elgin Illinois and a Marquette University student in Milwaukee was killed yesterday in a fatal incident. He was identified by authorities and authorities continue to investigate the cause of the accident.
City council approved a bond plan for the water system at an estimated cost of 201237 dollars and authorized preliminary plans with the finance and taxation committees and the mayor's committee. The move is the third major step before construction and follows an earlier land option and a public hearing setup by the state public service commission. Sunrise Point subdivision plat was accepted, and rezoning hearings set for Oct. 5. A joint meeting on police salaries was referred to committees. Three extensions to Monroe Transit Lines routes were approved. The Chicago firm Chapman and Cutler will provide legal counsel on the water bond issue, with work to begin after required information from the water department is obtained.
Washington reports the United States plans to reopen immigration gates for Germans living in the Reich after seven years. Up to 25 957 Germans will be admitted annually, with mass registration in western Germany and Austria. Congress approves 205 000 for displaced persons over two years and restores the pre war German quota.
Soviet and American observers report that 19 western Berlin police were seized from city hall by Russian tommy gunners and east Berlin troops after a claimed safe conduct. French Brig. Gen. Jean Ganeval protested, while U S commandant Col. Frank Howley called it a double cross as allied talks faltered and western relief funds lingered.
The nation faced a darker labor outlook with three major strikes continuing and a threat to halt telephone service. About 64,000 workers remain idle in oil, trucking, and shipping, while CIO telephones workers set September 17 as a strike date affecting 2,300 Bell locations in 43 states.
Frank M. Tanberg 74 a Monroe native died at Mercy hospital Janesville Sunday night after a Thursday admission. Funeral services were held today at Overton funeral home with Rev Herbert C Kimmel officiating. Burial in Oak Hill Cemetery. He was born November 22 1873 in Monroe and married Elizabeth Rhodes in Iowa. The couple moved to Janesville 40 years ago. He was a painter and decorator. Surviving are a brother C O Tanberg Seattle two sisters Mrs Charles George Seattle and Mrs H R Day Orinda California and a niece Mrs Harry Shoemaker route 2 Janesville. Mrs Tanberg died in 1922.
Through yesterday 548 men had registered at the armory under the 1948 draft law. Mrs. Clara Ritter, clerk of the selective service board, announced today. Paul Archer Chapman of Monroe, a veteran, and Gerald Vincent Thomm of route 3, a non veteran, were the first to register today of the group born in 1926. Registration of that age group continues tomorrow.
High Point officers report a mahogany clothes wardrobe with a secret folding front revealing 89 whisky bottles neatly stored in a concealed back compartment. The covert unit, valued at about 600 dollars, shows cabinet craftsmanship rivaling fine furniture.

Witnesses were called including Francis McIntyre, assistant director at the commerce department’s office of international trade, to explain the export licensing process.
