A public hearing on the proposed 957 249 county budget was held at 2 30 p m with a county highway commissioner election slated for later. Several wage increases were approved for highway and sheriff staff, the county extension agent, and the courthouse custodian, amid debate over district attorney pay.
Third annual Green County 4 H recognition program will be held Saturday night at 8 in the Monroe high school auditorium. Walter Bjoraker of the University of Wisconsin agri cultural extension education department will be guest speaker. The county 4 H Achievement Orchestra directed by Greta Pitkin Monroe high school student in its second year will perform a Halloween number Dance of the Goblins. Climax of the program will be the announcement of the 1958 county achievement boy and girl with prior winners competing.
Hundreds of area children join a 6 15 p m Halloween parade around the square led by the Monroe 30 member pep band and Shrine KC clown band. Prizes, treats and post parade parties follow in the gym with dozens of volunteers and local organizations assisting.
Monroe pupils in grades three through six will canvass neighborhoods tomorrow starting at 5:30 p.m. to collect pennies nickels and dimes for UNICEF aiding children worldwide. Supervisors from the Monroe Christian Youth Council organize parochial teams in four districts with permission slips and a certificate upon return.
Mayor Victor N. Schiller authorized City Attorney Arthur C. Benkert and the owners attorney Rodney O. Kittelsen to draft the purchase contract for the Wells building on 11th Street. City Council approved a 35000 price for offices, recreation and parking with the mayor announcing he would neither veto nor sign the measure. An Industrial Commission report on remodeling is awaited and an inspector visited Tuesday.
Madison market reports steady overall demand for American cheese with fair activity. Cheddars offered freely and longhorn varieties in light supply. prices range from 33 to 42 cents per pound for various block and daisies formats, with premiums noted for moisture content.
Three American scientists win the 1958 Nobel Prize in medicine for solving heredity riddles. Beadle and Tatum share half the prize for genes regulating chemical steps. Lederberg receives half for genetic recombination in bacteria. The awards highlight gene action and enzyme regulation in cellular synthesis.
Secretary of Labor James P. Mitchell told 100 Racine and Kenosha business leaders the nation is out of recession and jobs will improve. He urged defeat of Senator Proxmire as fiscally reckless and aligned with Gov. Faubus. Proxmire defended President and GOP failures, while Honeck criticized the Fair Tax Committee. Reynolds warned Wisconsin relies on neighboring states for its milk sales and Lake Michigan water issues.
Joseph Barry 69 rural Argyle farmer died shortly after arrival at St. Clare hospital this morning. Survivors include his wife and two sons Bernard Argyle and Gene Illinois. Arrangements are pending at Erickson funeral home Argyle.
About 70 area industry representatives attended a half hour darkness exercise at Idle Hour Mansion. The Green County Safety Council and Wisconsin Council of Safety sponsored the event, highlighting eye safety and industrial safety through a “Let’s Pretend” tour conducted by Murdock Pryor of Allen-Bradley.
Seven people were hurt in two separate crashes near Albany last night. A car struck a ditch on Highway 9 near Haines curve and burst into flames, rescuers pulled passengers free, and the vehicle was a total loss. In front of Oaktron Industries on Highway 39 south, three others were injured, treated at Monroe clinic, and both cars sustained considerable damage.
A UAW committee named the Committee for Good Government contributed 54350 to nine states including Wisconsin Senator William Proxmire. Douglas Fraser heads the group, tied to Walter Reuther's administration. Proxmire received the largest gift of 4500 while Gaylord Nelson was listed for governor with no amount specified.
A 19 year old former bank teller Gary L Koell was indicted by a federal grand jury for embezzling 200 dollars from the First National Bank of Oshkosh on Wednesday.
Oshkosh prosecutors seek Vernon Dillman for questioning in the death of Ruth Schmidt 17 whose decomposed body was found near a marsh. Dillman, 22, is wanted on parole violation after vanishing Aug 15 the last day Schmidt was seen alive.
City Clerk Freda M. Bray reports total registration reached 4,237 for the November 4 election, up 27 from September’s 4,210. Ward totals show gains in all districts as deaths reduce votes, with each ward listed: First 559 to 549, Second 518 to 516, Third 532 to 527, Fourth 505 to 505, Fifth 500 to 498, Sixth 546 to 538, Seventh 521 to 528, Eighth 556 to 549.
In Springhill Nova Scotia twelve miners trapped a week in the Cumberland No 2 coal mine were rescued after a rock collapse. They endured no food or water a long darkness and prayed and sang until rescuers found them on Wednesday. Grounded by air leaks and debris they received coffee and vitamins via a copper tube and were brought to safety one by one.
